With the release of the new iPad expected to now be just weeks away, I thought I'd compile a list of what I think could be 'tentpole' features of the new device. I think this will be a significant update, especially when it comes to software as well considering that the iPad seems somewhat neglected over the past few years.

Here's my predictions.

1. Retina HD Display (The same PPI as iPhone 6 Plus)
2. Apple A8X/M8 Chips (The X to drive the higher resolution, Retina HD Display)
3. New iSight Camera (5 megapixels, but with many of the features of the iPhone 6)
4. 802.11ac Wifi
5. Split Screen Multi-Tasking
6. Touch ID
7. Apple Pay (Possible that there'll be no NFC antenna, only secure element to make in-app purchases with Apple Pay.
Passbook coming to new iPad Air as a result)

16GB, 64GB and 128GB Storage Options. Available in Sliver, Gold and Space Grey.

What do you think? Feel free to criticise/suggest some of your own below.

Smaller scale, they pulled back to Apple's internal venue. It'll be small scale, just those features above.

Won't need passbook if payments are only for in-device purchases.

Regular A8. 16/64/128.

Think about it the other way around: with a NFC chip inside, the iPads would be able to act as receiving points for Apple Pay. Some companies already use iPads as point-of-sale devices, but they need to buy add-on hardware to process credit cards. If the iPad requires no additional hardware investment to process sales, it becomes a more compelling device for retailers. Granted, traditional credit cards aren't going anywhere fast and the NFC chip would need to be opened up to third-party applications so that Android phones with NFC would also be able to interact with such iPads, but it's a possibility.

The other element to consider is that while NFC is the technology behind all of this new payment buzz, it's not limited in application to payments. It's very possible that Apple has some planned, future usage for the NFC chip beyond Apple Pay, and that it wants to begin placing the technology into current devices in preparation.

On final consideration, if people whip out their iPads to take photos, I suppose it's not too crazy to imagine that they'd use them for making purchases, too...

I agree, and think it could be a fantastically cool. But Apple doesn't want in this market. Not this years. 3 years down the road when tokenized ISIS pay for Android has grown, and ApplePay has grown and it's become the norm?

But for now...

Think of the indie artsy festivals, food trucks, etc. No physical receipt printer, no cash drawer, no support for MSR. These people already have slim margins, they can't spend all this extra to support a payment method for a subset of their potential customers.

Did I say "thinner"? No, I said lighter, much much lighter, NOT thinner.
No, that was another thread that I had open at the same time.

But note I also mocked the desire to make it lighter... :D

Two birds with one stone, and all of that kind of thing...

I don't see how they can shave any weight without making the glass thiner (it already flexes) and removing metal from the shell.

Which would contribute to the structural issues associated with making it thinner...

Wait, I am talking to myself again...

How about a pleather back on it with a plastic body and a metal frame. Everyone loves pleather.

Like you said, credit cards aren't going anywhere, so they will still need to purchase additional hardware. And they always will, unless Apple creates an iPad with a cash register, receipt printer and all the other bells and whistles that you need at a checkout counter.

Sure would be nice. I'll be using mine on a boat quite a lot, so plastic and a grippy back would definitely be good things, but I doubt they'll do that. I'm quite sure that it'll be cold, slippery and bendy aluminum again. But that's fine, too, since I'mm 99,9 % sure that I'll stick it in a case anyway.

i rather have them take away the rear camera n use the space for battery

How about the front camera and speaker as well? That space could also be used for improved battery.

Stereo speakers? Come on Apple, thats just doubling the space used by the speakers, instead use it for battery!!!!!

Oh man, I lolled so hard at your post broc.

Lolz, given yourself .1% of an opportunity to not use a case.

Pic of your boat brah, you can't talk it up like that ---- you use your iPad on your boat (charting your next destination no doubt) and not show us what it looks like... if you post a pic of your boat with half a dozen girls in bikinis on board then I'm out of macrumors for good.

Its probably gonna have 1GB of RAM, cause apple seems to think that should be enough for everyone.

I liked the rumour about the anti-glare screen. That one sadly isn't being bandied around much any more, but it'd be enough to make me switch from my 4th gen if it were true.

Grrr no Stereo speakers again!

What the heck. No stereo speakers... This really pisses me off. I would love to see an iPad that utilised this hardware feature. I know there is a pair of stereo speakers. But they are too damn close together. I would love to see what HTC did on their m8 also being implemented in the iPad.

ipad air have stereo speakers, somehow so i guess the next generation will have it too. I think also a thinner profile will be as well thanks to the A8 chip. So i guess the mark 6.9mm or 7.1mm thin

Don't see Apple Pay making it onto any iPad.. who would seriously take their iPads to go shopping and then pull it out to pay with?

The same numb nuts who take their Ipads to aquariums, sporting events, kids plays, etc... And hold their iPads up in front of everyone, blocking their views and being complete horses arses.

It would be PERFECT for them. And there are a crap ton of those people.

802.11ac seems like a given. As does TouchID. I highly doubt Apple is going to market any future full-sized iPad (or larger) CPUs with 'X' despite the fact that even the A7 in the iPad Air was different (faster) than the one in both the iPad mini and iPhone 5s, but yes, given that the chips are usually different, 2GB of RAM is still fair game. If they're gonna cut out one storage size, it won't be 32GB...if anything, it'd be 16GB. Also, the camera features are unlikely to come over. Otherwise, yeah, your predictions seem sound.

I called the Retina HD Display over a week ago now. Now it's being reported as potentially true by MacRumors.

I think printed receipts are becoming a thing of the past too. It's much easier to just email the receipt or in many cases, like an arts and crafts festival for example that no receipt will even be required. The only other bell and whistle I can think of would be shoppers club cards or stuff like that. However, it'd be easy to tie those kinds of things electronically to an iPad as well.

Just saying, much of what we think is truly needed at the cash register really isn't.

I'll be upgrading if we get

1) Better battery life
2) 2GB memory
3) Touch Id

I think I'll be quite happy after the announcement.

Do we think

32GB, 64GB and 128GB

or

16GB, 64GB and 128GB?

Of course it will be 16. No way Apple is giving up the $$$ they make on people upgrading. Of course, those people won't be upgrading to iOS9, due to lack of space. But that doesn't seem to matter as much as more $$$
