People think the new iPad Air M3 has the chip as the M3 MacBook Air/Pro but actually no it has a 9 cores GPU like the iPad Air M2. Ok that might be fine for the iPad Air but things are getting worse with the iPad A16…

Everyone is angry that the iPad A16 doesn’t has Apple Intelligence but things are getting worse :

- It has one binned CPU core

- It has one binned GPU core

So yeah the iPad A16 is slower than the iPhone 14 Pro/15… I don’t understand why they did that one the iPad A16.

PS : The iPad 10 has even 6 CPU cores… against 5 on this iPad… bruh difference won’t be very large I guess…

Who is everyone? I’m not angry about it.

It’s the very basic iPad and Apple needs to have some differentiation between it and the iPad Air. If the basic iPad can do everything, the Air can do then why not just have the basic iPad. Same with the iPad Air versus the iPad Pro. Apple needs to have strong differentiation between the models and it looks like they are doing that. For grandma to watch her soaps the regular iPad works perfect. For someone that just needs to browse the web it’s great. For someone that wants more advanced features that’s why they have the Air and the Pro.

These are freshly fabbed chips just like iPad mini with A17 Pro. Apple just likes to disable cores for marketing reasons. They don’t like the price of the secondary iPad Pro market to be too low, which in turn affects new iPad Pro prices.

Ditto with iPad A16. Consumer replacement cycles are getting longer and longer. Apple can’t count on unit sales so ASP becomes more important.

I'll wager these are binned chips from TSMC's Arizona fab that started up last year (https://appleinsider.com/articles/24/09/17/apple-a16-chip-is-now-being-produced-in-the-usa). They've probably generated a load of binned A16 chips as they got the line up to speed. It takes around 3 months to process a wafer so it tallies that chips would start coming out in ~Dec-24.

So first thing, most people, especially at that price point, will NOT BE ANGRY about missing Apple intelligence (aka AI).

And second thing, the alternative of using binned chips is Apple throw them away. Why throw away chips that can otherwise be repurposed and functional to some extent?

Overall this is a non-issue. Borderline first world problem I might add.

Why do you even use the term "binned chip?" Of course chip fab optimizing involves binning. Who cares? Your OP headlines as if binned chips are defective for their intended usages, and they are not.

Does this still have non laminated display? Which is for me the worst part of this iPad.
It absolutely does. You can get a laminated display in the iPad Air. That’s the cool thing. Apple is offering something at different price points for different people. Not everyone wants to pay for a laminated display. I absolutely do so that’s one of the reasons why I bought the iPad Air and it’s absolutely awesome

You’re spec chasing as though it means anything to the target users of either of these devices. My next large iPad will be an Air, not a Pro. I don’t care about OLED (hate it actually as it hurts/strains my eyes), Apple neutered the camera setup in the m4 pro compared to my M1 Pro, the DRAM is a neglible difference, don’t care about 129 vs 60 hz (see OLED above), the price saving is significant. Your other threads seem spec obsessed. This is a waste of time as the pursuit will never net contentment, only endless wishing for something that will never arrive.

EDIT: It’s all a moot point until iPadOS actually can put these systems through their paces and use all that horsepower. That’s on Apple, not their SoC’s.

Well I am not sure how you are happy paying 600 for an iPad with an overkilled cpu and 60hz display. Back in 2017 the iPad Pro 10.5 started at 649 and it had 120hz pro motion display. Honestly the iPad Air should at least be made with a 90hz display by now. I got a 20 dollar tablet from metro by tmobile and it had a 90hz display.

C'mon man. You're getting a new iPad for $349 MSRP, and likely will be on sale within months. It's a good deal for a portable that will last for years. These are entry-level models for casual users, as well as babysitting devices for parents. This product is specced and priced exactly right for the target demo.

Extremely happy because I own one and paid probably that for my 4th generation iPad Air. It has an A14 so you definitely have to hide that from your friends because you’re not going to get any cool high fives for that spec. It’s still OP for what I use it for. Browsing the web and watching YouTube. The 60 Hz display is perfectly fine for me. I don’t game on it so don’t need a high refresh rate. To me it doesn’t look better. I know some people say anything below 100 Hz causes their eyes to bleed, so if you’re in that group, then probably wouldn’t want to buy the Air.

Yeah, the iPad Pro still has 120 Hz display. The price has gone up. Adjusted for inflation that’s about $840 so yeah it looks like Apple went up a little bit but it also doesn’t look like the old school iPad anymore. It has a real camera and Face ID. I know some people would say they don’t want either one of those on an iPad so perhaps it’s debatable if those features are worth anything. I can’t justify paying $999 for an iPad especially since none of the features on the iPad Pro interest me. well, Face ID might be kind of cool to have but I’m fine with Touch ID.

Yeah, here we go with the numbers game. 90 Hz doesn’t mean a better display. This is a game that’s played on every mid to low end android device where they cut corners in some fashion, but purposely boost one spec so they can put it on the outside of the box. Also, you don’t have a $20 Tablet. You might’ve paid $20 up front but you aren’t walking out of a store paying $20 for a usable tablet without some type of catch. If that’s the case, I’m going to get five of them for Christmas gifts.

True about inflation but also technology price goes down. 120hz display should be cheaper than it was in 2017. Actually I got 4 tablets since that is the limit on metro, you just cancel them on the next day and no issues,
