OP what are using to do your time machine backups with?
I recently replaced an old, struggling Time Capsule that both my partner and I used for backup, with a mesh system at home: Deco M5.

With the new mesh I could start using an old Drobo 5N that I rarely had running because of noise. But now that is standing in another room with one of the Decos, and I've set up Time Machine enabled shares on that, one for my partner and another for me. Works perfectly**.

** It worked so well, that I tried setting up the Air with Migration Assistant from that Time Machine backup, over wifi...that was not a good idea. After running over night - about 12 hrs - it still reported over 12 hrs left, so I killed the migration and just set the Air up from scratch.

Got the new MacBook Air on Monday, the 8/8 with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD, and after a really bad attempt to use migration assistance over wifi, over night, I just gave up set it up from scratch yesterday.

It's so effing cool (conceptually, of course, but here I'm referring to temperature). I downloaded all my Photo Library from iCloud, installed several apps (including the mastodont Xcode), and started first Time Machine backup, played Music, and more, all at the same time, while running MS Outlook and Teams plus the abomination that is Discord.app for work. The machine barely exceeded room temperature at any time.

I've always used a wooden cutting board under my laptops, to keep them from overheating (themselves and my lap/whatever surface they stand on) and I see no need for that, any more. Since the initial "stress" the machine has been cool to the touch at all time. It's unbelievable.

I love this machine.
Not mine. It is for the most part but then I get the dreaded "your system has exceeded application memory" popup and it starts getting nuclear hot on me. I have a 2 week old M1 MBA 8gb/256gb. Happens daily. I've filed for return and upgrading to a setup with 16gb/512gb M1, hoping it resolves this to some extent.

I've never gotten that message, even on my old 2010 MBA 11" (that was my main machine as late as August 2019).

What apps are you running?

Have you checked in Activity Monitor to see what's causing that?
You may have a Safari memory leak or a stuck process hogging your CPU.
