It's also about $1000 more.

It's $999 $1099 if you want 1080p
Faster GPU than the base 15in MBP
Slower CPU (2 core i5 2.3GHz)
6GB DDR3 standard
Rated 8h 22m battery, and the current test out shows that it DOES last longer than the 15in MBP.

I'd say it's rather good competition.

Please source where it says that the GPU is faster.

Another hilarious attempt to bash others, when there's no need.

Is Dell competition for Apple? Really?

I say no. Not even close.

Apple is far better, we all know that.

This thread must be for the sole purpose of ego boosting.

Enjoy yourself :)

It looks such a nasty knock-off, I really don't understand why Dell even went through all the bother. :)

And yet the screen on the XPS 15 is better(1080p anyway), and the sound is far beyond what a Macbook Pro can produce.

I have both an XPS 15 and a Macbook Pro.

Looks wise, meh, the Dell isn't much to look at.

The JBL Speakers on the XPS 15 are the best I've ever heard coming from a notebook.

Honestly, I think I would prefer all laptops I get to not even come with internal speakers... put that space into something more useful :)

ROFLMAO --- DId you even read the REVIEW?

Let me quote it here .....

Maybe I missed something? How do you define " solid " ???

My current MBP does that, and while it's no unibody it's still pretty solid all things considered

For someone who wants something close to the aesthetic, needs a 15" screen, and needs windows it's a solid buy, particularly if you want a bit more resolution on that screen! (this is something Apple needs to fix, quick, they're getting outstripped in the display dept by a lot of companies now, and while this dell's angles suck it still beats on resolution, comparable machines to the MBP from Sony, Lenovo, etc take the curr MBPs display out to the back of the parking lot and beat it up for its lunch money)

You can talk about processor speed, GPU quality, price, or just about any relatively small difference in specs between this Dell and the MacBook Pro all you want. What it really comes down to is the experience of using an Apple product. I'm talking about things like the design, the feel of the trackpad, the quality of the display, and all of the little things that make a Mac what it is. I don't think any computer manufacturer can realistically meet the quality of an Apple product at this time. It's the experience of using one of their products that has made Apple one of the top consumer corporations in the world.

Mercedes vs Honda

You can't compare them. The price point is different. The Dell is probably a pretty good machine, for the price. I'll pay more and enjoy my MBP.

its just a blatant ripoff, the ports, the dvd drive, the battery check button... shame on dell, some of their other laptops are (were) nice when I was using them 6 months ago, but this is egg on their face, just a blatant copy.

I don't see why people get so worked up over stuff like this. Isn't imitation a form of flattery? The Dell will run Windows... Our MacBooks can run both. To each his own I say. :D

I've owned several Apple notebooks, going back to the Powerbook G4.

I've never seen an Apple notebook that is so flimsy that it flexes to the point of audibly affecting the air flow through the cooling system.

Not to mention that in order to hear that, it has to be pretty damn loud to begin with.

One of the main reason for me switching to Mac was the construction of them compared to ALL OTHER NOTEBOOKS on the consumer market at that time.

The Powerbook G4, if it had any chassis flex was minimal, and all non-existant when compared to every other notebook offered for sale in ....

Best Buy
Circuit City
CompUSA

Yeah, I shopped in all of those places, in that order before a guy at CompUSA put an Apple Powerbook G4 in my hands.

That Dell may well be more 'solid' than all other Windows based notebooks, but that's not saying much at all.

Personally Im surprised its taken DELL so long... you know, since that laptop looks more like a shameless knockoff of my PowerBook G4 (2003 and 2005 models). And I do believe its only about .03" thinner than a PowerBook G4 Titanium.. which I thought we had in 2001  - And the battery is relatively rubbish, whatever DELL and Apple state - and you can alter the tests in many ways - such as running the MacBook Pro under BootCamp, where its widely known the power management is a lot worse, so I wouldn't pay attention to that - Id just get one and try it and see if it could outlast a 15"MBP for what I do if I was ever considering the 2.

I don't think any computer manufacturer can realistically meet the quality of an Apple product at this time.

Obviously you didn't see the report a year or so back saying that Apples dead middle on quality. With Acer, Gateway and Emachines being behind them, thats technically just one company, if you factor that in Apples barely average.

3ft? its .02in thicker than a MBP.

I'm thinking of selling my new MBP for one. It would put more money back in my pocket, and I would get longer battery life and have a FHD display.

Dell laptop batteries last about 8-10 months before the battery life goes down to 20 minutes. Just sayin...

Actually, id say its Nissan vs. Mercedes.

The XPS 15z is a GT-R...fantastic bang for your buck, and an all around fantastic machine.

When the refreshed MBP's have a 1200p+ base screen and 1 GB VRAM for the 15', then theyll have more bragging rights. As it stands though, the XPS 15z is far superior for the price point.

I have a 4.5 year old dell laptop and I still get easily 4 hours out of the battery (with a ridiculous amount of crapware running [90 processes on XP)).

Wow i love my 13" mbp but hearing some of you mac fanboys just astonishes me. The "experience" is always your only argument. ******* the experience. Experience is very subjective. You might hate winvows 7 but most people like it.

BTW you said "I'm talking about things like the design, the feel of the trackpad, the quality of the display, and all of the little things that make a Mac what it is. "

Well the design is similar to the mbp so that should be pretty good.
experience of the trackpad? who knows till ya try it?
Screen quality? Well it has a better screen so idk where your argument is here.
All the little things? Like what? Less ports, dated tech., slower gpus; etc.

In the hardware department, apple is slacking. Hopefully this gets them off their ass.

what makes it a nissan vs. mercedes? just price? So if dell raised its price to match the mbp 15" would it be considered a bmw? lol

really?

the computer design is gorgeous. dell's misshapen tribute proves its appeal.

the processor is one of the fastest on the market.

it has potential to be great with thunderbolt.

thetrackpad without buttons is great. i don't know if it is better, but is it slacking?

products have life cycles. the mbp is in the middle of one. i don't see how it is slacking when it probably set the bar that dell aimed to overcome with their new product. maybe we should wait until the next mbp iteration before calling apple slackers :)
