As the title says, the changes Apple made to Markup in iOS 17 are not good.

To start, when first initiating an edit of a photo, the buttons appear dimmed out as though they are disabled.

Then once inside, they have removed the magnifier which was something I found handy. And all shapes to insert are solid now instead of outlines. It seems like the only time I ever used Markup was to highlight something by putting a circle or square around it but the only option now is to add a solid shape over something.

I’m sure Markup isn’t the most widely used feature, I just feel like this is a good example of what we get with “hey guys, it’s time for iOS X.0 so we need to find some stuff to change…”

You can still make a shape without it being solid.

Once in markup and choosing your shape, click on the color of the shape and turn the opacity all the way down. It will allow you to use the shape without it being colored in.

Hmm I can’t seem to get that to work. It’s like they took something simple and made it unnecessarily complicated for the sake of change.

If you change the opacity and then change the thickness of the outer edge it still works as it should. Here is a photo I just put a circle on in iOS17.

Not sure if you are aware of this cool feature, but an easy way to draw a circle/oval or rectangle is to just manually draw it, then when you complete the shape, continue holding your finger in place for a second, and it will automatically correct the shape for you.

Seems harder to explain in words rather than showing someone 😆

I completely forgot that exists. Thank you for the reminder!

This can’t replace outline. For one thing you can’t fine tune it further.

As someone else said, you can change the opacity.
- Tap on the color circle, which takes you to the color palette screen.
- Change the Opacity slider to zero (sliding left)
- Now also you can "add" this setting to your palette...
- Tap the '+' symbol and it will add to your custom settings.

It's annoying we have to do this though, as when you return to use the Markup again, it is the solid grey. Hopefully Apple will fix this. It seems logical to for the borders shapes to default as outlines!!

still don’t understand why they eliminated the magnifier. That is the only markup tool I use.
Needed to use that feature this morning... Where the hell was the memo telling me what I was going to lose when updating my 14P to 17 and dropping a bucket of clams on a new 15P...

Does Apple get feedback on all of these issues? There was no need to change how the Markup was. Fix the bugs first!

Federighi: Ok Markup team, you're up. Whatcha got for iOS 17?
Intern: Ok, so, you know the magnifier?
Federighi: (nods)
Intern: So, hear me out....we get rid of it
Federighi: (checks hair in mirror) Sounds good to me!
Schiller from the other room: Can't innovate anymore my ass!

It gets worse. When adding arrows to my photos, I cannot choose freeform location, it appears to “snap-to” the nearest line or element in the photo that it apparently thinks I should be pointing to, which is not at all what it should be pointing to. Completely unusable. Anyone else having this experience in addition to the 16 step insert of a basic outline shape for annotation? Am I missing something?

I can add arrows, move them wherever I want, move the start and end points individually, change the arc, all in freeform. The only “snapping” it appears to do is if I’m rotating a straight arrow, it seems to snap in place 45° increments.
