I curious if anyone knows why the drive in the 15" and the 17" are in different locations (vertically). The system is the same thickness, right? Or is the screen thicker on the 17" so the bottom is thinner to keep the 1" height?

I am pretty sure they use different drives...the 15" using a 'slim' model while the 17" is a standard size. The 15" slot is then lower on the drive physically, so it needs the lower design.

They take different optical drives. The 17" MBP takes the same size as the old PowerBooks and newer iBooks, the 15" MBP takes the same size as the MacBooks, which is thinner.

The MBP did not get a redesign. It got a different key assignment for the keyboard and a more bluish backlight.
