That doesn't seem to be much worse than the Samsung...

Been running a SAMSUNG SpinPoint MT2 HM100UI 1TB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s for a while. Not the fastest thing around, that's for sure...

Hmm, I just tested my stock 750Gb 5400rpm HD with XBench, and here's what I got:

Your Toshiba is much faster than my stock Hitachi drive from Apple. Also, Xbench will give you a different score every time you run it. The one I posted was straight from a cold boot. Compared to what I had I can notice just a tiny bit of difference. The Samsung shaved about 4-5 seconds off my boot time though.

I'm just glad there's a 9.5mm 1TB form factor now. Never wanted to try and cram a 12.5mm drive inside although others certainly have done so.

Just ordered the 1TB HDD from NewEgg. These are my results from my Hitachi 500GB 7200rpm.

Installed one for a guy at my work today in his 2008 Aluminum MacBook. The performance was rather decent.

I'm debating putting 2 of them in my MBP.

Same here. I bought 2. Currently using the other one in a cheap enclosure for a Time Machine drive.

I'm going about a week on the Samsung now. The extra breathing room of 1TB sure feels good. Plus it's nice to be able to take everything with you. :)

Nope :D:cool::D Philips Head #00 for the screws on the back and the HD retainer bracket inside, Torx #6 for the lugs on the side of the HD.
That toolkit should have the PH 00.

Couldn't find that toolkit. Bought what I thought was the correct phillips and it was too big. Ended up using a "jewelers" screwdriver I had laying around the house. It's a good thing the screws weren't in too tight 'cause you have no torque with those tiny things.

That doesn't seem to be much worse than the Samsung...

That's 9 points less on 68.6, significant I would say.

The problem with Xbench is that results aren't consistent.

And even if they were consistent, Xbench says too little about real world performance.

Your stock drive can be faster in real world even though it produces lower Xbench results.

So why is the same drive discussed in this thread over $120 more these days? (I bought 2 back in July for under about $90 each).

Hard drive prices everywhere are going up significantly right now due to the flooding in Thailand, where these things are made. Hopefully well see them start falling back to where they were soon.

Interesting. Makes sense.

I was about to recommend this drive to a query in another thread and just noticed it. Ouch.

Does this apply to most Asian goods these days... like SSD's? If so I recently got a good deal on a Crucial M4 and maybe dodged a bullet.

Apparently SSD prices hasn't changed much.

If the assembly plants where the SSD's were made also flooded then they would be seeing the same price increases, but it looks like it only affected the hdd plants.

Western Digital got hit the hardest. I'm seeing one drive I bought about a month and a half ago almost double in price.
