See the attached picture. The antenna sits at the very top of the "tower" and nowhere else. The rest is empty space, reserved for the HDD in Time Capsule.

I care about the form AND the function. That is why I buy Apples and not oranges.

I'm not going to play I understand how Apple implemented it in this little box, obviously it a much simpler and less precise form, but the technology has been around a long time. Apple is constrained to the same laws of physics that industry and the military are to carry this out. In this case the elements may be simpler and fewer but you still need sufficient area to form and direct the energy.

In this case, I would guess Apple's product can direct energy to general directions of a house or office containing clients. If they made it the size of a microwave and increased the number of antenna elements accordingly they could probably effectively target individual client devices.
