I grabbed an iPhone 8 for 300 at target for the kiddo. Buying an iPod touch has always been silly.

for that price. Basically the same device with an older processor and $200 bucks for 32 go in 2019 sorry too much. $400 for 256gb in 2019, nope. About $100 too much at least, if the entry was $99 going to $299 maybe. C’mon Apple

I guess I am one of the VERY Few Happy iPod Touch 7th Generation 32GB customers on this thread!

I got a 128gb 7 gen two weeks ago and love it! Use it for working out, listening to music at work, and texting at home.

iPod Touch 7th Gen for serious listening :)

I must be one of the few happy iPod Touch 7th Generation 32GB owners which I purchased last month off the Apple On-Line Veterans Store.

Pairing a set of the new Taotronics Bluetooth noise cancelling headphones,

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07T33L3NL/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

with a 256GB 2019 Touch makes a super audio experience replacement for two 160GB Classics I own.
A newer chip would have been welcome, but the 2019 Touch will outlive my aging Classics plus IOS13.
Got the phones for $60 on a promotion from Amazon.
Better audio than my Sony's and some $300 jobs I have owned.
The phones work paired with my old iPad Air as well, but the Touch is much smaller, newer and more battery life.
I'll miss the click wheel. The Touch also Bluetooths my 19K iTunes tracks to my Otonic hearing aids.
Anyone got a better idea for $460 total?

I don't think you'll find a more complete package with iPod Touch at their price range. Oh, if you pair it with one of the best wired earphones mankind has ever made, you'll be shocked on how crazy good this little iPod Touch sounds

"It's like they know if an Apple user wants an mp3 player they've basically no other choice so they know they can just put any old garbage out."

What about an iPhone SE? Fast, good sound, and superb battery life, even on Wi-Fi, unlike the iPT 6G.

How does the IPT 7 do with battery life when on Wi-Fi? On the 6, it drops like a stone.

The iPhone SE has a much better battery life. I have a SE and a Touch 7 gen. The battery on the Touch 7 when on WiFi is comparable to the 6.

Ugh... STILL the same, dinky, 4" screen! Same reason I didn't update my IpT5 with an IpT6. On top of that, both the IpT6 and this new IpT7 are still quite pricey!

At this point, I too will wait for sales, or see if I can buy a used Iph7 for less than $100.

What size screen were you hoping for? I was hoping for a plus size 5.5”. Or even bigger. But I doubt it’s going to happen, sadly.

Anything bigger! Back when iPhones first went past their 4" size (Iph6 and Iph6+ IIRC), they were at 4.7" and 5.5". Even 4.7" would've been an appreciable improvement. In fact, I started off on the IpT3, and am currently using an IpT5. Every new generation I've purchased was for the screen improvement... IpT4, Retina. IpT5, 3.5" to 4". Since the IpT6 offered nothing new there, that was the first one I didn't get.

As is, I have an Ipad Air (1) running ios8. If need be, I can consider updating iOS (at the cost of losing access to a few apps). An IpT is nice for portability. However, I'll have to look into if it's a better deal to just get a used iPhone with a larger screen.

I actually tried using a plus iPhone as a large iPod Touch (or as a mini iPad mini, however one wants to look at it). It might be a good option for you, but it wasn’t for me because the Continuity features didn’t really work. This is because iPhones aren’t intended to be secondary devices to other iPhones. It was especially a hassle for me that SMS messages didn’t sync.

I like to put my main phone (SE) on the charger and use the bigger secondary device exclusively while at home. I’ve been using an iPad mini for this but it’s a tad large to be carrying around the home all the time.
But if Continuity isn’t a requirement for you, then a big iPhone is a good option.

I had to lookup what Continuity is. Yeah, the only involvement I have in the iOS ecosystem is I have a large mess of games on there, with some a choice few I still play actively, while 80% of everything else I may want to get to some day. Continuity, or its lack of, won't indeed be an issue!

I have 2 iPhones and SMS messages definitely sync. The "receiving" side is easy peasy (using text message forwarding and toggling it on); I receive SMS messages sent to my secondary number on my primary device at the same time as the secondary's screen lights up. I'm not bothered about syncing the other way though (texts to my primary phone lighting up my secondary one), so I never enabled it. They do sync up when the primary iphone is connected to power and wifi and uploads them to imessage in the cloud.

I’m not sure, but that doesn’t sound like the same thing. I don’t have two lines. I have just one line on one iphone and the other iphone that I tried using was wifi only (like an ipad/ipt).

I also have two ipads at home which receive SMS messages that come in to my primary line within about 15 seconds of the primary phone itself. Often faster, and sometimes the notification flashes up on the ipad before my apple watch.

Before messages in the cloud came along, my primary/secondary phone were set up pretty much exactly as yours were with the exception that the secondary one had a sim card in it - cell data was disabled though, so for all intents and purposes it was the same setup except that it could also receive its own SMS messages. That worked perfectly too.

What setting(s) did you turn on and then expect your SMS messages to sync?

I have iPads that receive sms as well. What I said was that a second iphone does not work the same way. A second iphone used like an ipad (without a second line) cannot receive sms messages (nor make phone calls, and I believe other Continuity features) via the primary phone like an ipad (or ipt) can. It can only make/receive imessages.

Again, I’m not sure, but I believe your second phone was able to receive sms from your primary phone because the second phone had it’s own number/line and it was set up to receive forwarded sms messages. An iphone without its own number/line can’t do that.
