I, personally, had assumed that the next revision to AppleTV (most likely hardware update this time) was coming later rather than sooner. However, I just talked to someone this weekend who said that a Apple Genius had told them point-blank not to do so because a new one was imminent, and would feature TiVo functionality.

What do you guys think? Is this a possibility? If so, when? Personally, I had all but ruled out this type of functionality being added to the AppleTV because Apple seems commited to the rental and sales downloading model, and I really don't see how you can combine that with TiVo like functionality. To me, TiVo -- with all the commercials and such -- just seems a bit 'unclean and too cluttered' for Apple. Doesn't seem their style.

I think the "Genius" is full of it. Retail employees have no clue what is coming out and when.

Yeah the guy is full of something. However, if the Apple TV added DVR capabilities, I'd buy one in a heartbeat. For now, I'll stick with the HD TiVO.

Apple store employees don't get a "heads up" about anything far as I can tell.

Was the Genius holding the crack pipe when you asked him, or did he set it on the counter? :D :D :D :D

In this industry, never say never. BUT, I would be extremely surprised to see an AppleTV update that significant happen in the next six months. Even the next year would be iffy.

i get the feeling they will drop 40gb and have 160gb and 250gb as more and more dumb people are buying music movies and tv shows from the itunes store, and then hopefully we will be able to buy HD movies to keep and sync back to our computer...

It's always nice to read a reasoned, well-positioned answer/opinion like the one above. Why, it makes me proud to call him a brother-in-:apple:TV.

Well, let's be practical. It's likely he's been saying this for two years, and has only now by chance actually had some fact to base it on.

What about any of this article implies that an update is coming at all, never mind relatively soon?

If the "genius" was right, it was simply the case of an infinite number of Apple employees uttering random words. Sooner or later, one of them will make sense.

    Apple "Genius" = Typwriting Monkey?

The infinite monkey theorem states that a monkey hitting keys at random on a typewriter keyboard for an infinite amount of time will almost surely type a particular chosen text, such as the complete works of William Shakespeare

Personally I hate the "genius" tag they give them as most haven't a clue.

I can't talk for other Apple stores but here in London, the Regent St store has only now updated the demo machines to Take 2. Hilarious as the staff are on them all the time, no doubt trying to get up to speed. Obviously these same people are in the position to say when a next release is due :)

    Apple Tv at Sam's

My local Sam's Club was selling the 40 Gb Apple TV for $137 and some odd cents today. Looked like they had a boat load of them.

My Costco had them for $90, but that was before even Take 2 was announced.

The Apple TV was just updated. There is no way something is coming soon for it. The DVR thing looks great, but that won't happen until Macworld '09 at the earliest. The patent looks amazing, but it is not right around the corner.
