iPhone 2G

Just had a random thought too, normally the original iPhone is reffered to as the iPhone 2G. I know this is network chip based but still... Just to add to confusion!

The OP's logic is flawed. If Apple releases two phones this fall, the 4S and the 5, you will be one of the few calling the iPhone 5 by the name "iPhone 6" since it is the 6th iPhone.

True. But you can't name the iPhone 3G "iPhone 2" or something, that would imply it doesn't have 3G. I highly doubt the 3GS was only introduced to get the naming sequence back on track btw :p .

That's probably why they decided to call it the iPhone 3G, that way people would know it is with 3G. But then they couldn't call the next one the iPhone 3 because people would wonder where the G went and somehow think it lost a feature. So I think they gave it a placeholder name (3GS with S for speed) that way they could show what exactly the new iPhone got since from the outside it looked exactly the same and it set the name back on track. But that's just how I think it works out.

Probably why so many people thought their iPhone 4 already had 4G. But I agree, I don't like calling the first gen iPhone the iPhone 2G, I prefer "first gen iPhone".

The fifth iPhone will be called whatever Apple wants to call it. And from the announcement on that's what we'll all call it as well. No one calls the 3GS the iPhone 3. No one calls the iPhone 3G the iPhone 2.

Our speculations on naming conventions, no matter how rational, have no bearing on how we will be referring to the fifth iPhone in the future. It all depends on how Apple chooses to brand their next phone.

Thanks, Mr. Patronising, but I don't think anyone here was expecting the branding team to be consulting the thread for inspiration. We're all speculating purely for interest and discussion, not to change Apple's marketing strategy.

Or I could be completely wrong in which case we shouldn't bother using these discussion boards as you're right, we're not going to change the course of events very much.

But rumors are the 4s will be the 4 with an a5 and better camera right?

So what would the 5 be?
Bigger screen and new shape on top?
