Which puts the GeForce GTX 470 as the likely candidate based on their past behaviour. I'm sure there will be a lot of complaining on here if that happens, despite it being a decent graphics card.

+1

I believe most of MP users will complain about it;
In addition; Steve may enjoy reading argument of angry customers while they are discussing his action toward abandon of ATI for NVIDIA. LOOL

A 5870 is 27W lower TDP (takes smaller chunk out of limited 300W PCI-e bus power cap), higher GFlops, and supports OpenGL 4.0 (as opposed 3.2 ). [ I think cheaper also. ]

i still hope for ATI 5870.
The Nvidia Drivers for OS X are the worst driver i have ever seen.

On my already sold mac pro the ati 4870 in COD4:MW outperformed a Nvidia GTX285 by far - really by far.
the ati drivers are - as today i say - way better than the nvidia´s.

maybe this may change in the future

According to Barefeats, the GTX 285 outforms the HD 4870 when COD4 is played at a resolution of 2560 x 1600 and with a multi-sampling of 4 times.
The HD 4870 does out perform the GTX285 at lower resolutions.

Imho, the HD 5870 will be the high-end bto consumer card in the Mac Pro.

wasn't the whole reason Jobs gave us for switching to intel the power consumption?

also, i seriously doubt :apple: would go back to the cumbersome liquid cooling of the G5 era. isn't the heat envelope for the 5870 much cooler than that of the 480?

edit: google the references, they're out there and I'm far too lazy to look them up for the reader.
