Listen, guys, the X would have issues with movies regardless. The ratio is just terrible for watching anything that’s 16:9 in full screen.

Can somebody explain it to me?

Or zoom in and enjoy watching the movie. As far as I know, most directors focus the action in the center of the frame. If you care that you can’t see the whole tree on the edge of the screen, don’t zoom in. But, what do I know? I’m not a movie maker. I do know that I don’t notice the notch, that so many complain about, in my day to day use.

For wide angle content I feel that Netflix handles this issue the best. They exclude the notch while still leaving a minimal black border. I've only found a few apps that force you to view wide angle content with the notch (they do not allow you to zoom out to exclude)

I tend to watch TV shows on my iPhone X and the aspect ratio is not an issue--the notch is naturally excluded.

If you intend to watch a lot of movies on your phone I wouldn't go with the iPhone X or any phone with a notch.

Actually the X looks better than the 7+. X is zoomed in both to use notch.

7+ is zoomed

I zoom all my stuff.. It'll be cool if a director/producer or whatever actually used the notch as part of the scene. Maybe one of the shows/movies that Apple is acquiring may do that.

Both non-zoomed. HDR X is on top, 7+ on bottom.

For most filmmakers, there is nothing interesting ‘behind’ the notch. Plus you lose a lot, zooming the +.

We really need a "notch" thread that the moderators can stuff all of these threads in the same place.

Might as well do a TouchID vs FaceID thread, too!

Yes indeed! Any and all aspects of this debate have been flogged to absolute death.

I watch Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, and whatever else on my X every night. If you don’t zoom, the notch isn’t there. With the absolute black of the OLED display, it completely disappears. It’s not an issue for me...

The display area is a bit smaller on the X compared to the Plus phones, but the picture quality of the OLED vs the previous LCD screens is quite significant. Especially if you are viewing it in the dark. Real blacks make all the difference in low light.

It'd be great if the full screen (zoomed) mode didn't cut anything out along the edges, but its aspect ratio doesn't match.

This is why I always watch in non-zoomed mode...visuals on the edges of the screen are similar to incidental surround sound effects....they help create the environment that envelops the viewer.

since using it I actually like the way the notch looks on films/sports using the side of the display. I'm used to it now and feels normal now

I use my X all the time zoomed in. I would be surprised if you notice the notch during movies after a day or two. I know that I don't.
