I think that Karen will win the job but the twist is that the open position is in fact Jan's because she has to go on paternal leave (aka Michael knocked her up)

Sounds feasible. Maybe it's just wishful thinking, because I really want Karen out of the picture. Maybe then Jim will finally see that he belongs with Pam. I think anyone could see that since the very first episode.

Another thought is that Jim gets the corporate job and then dumps Karen and later dates Pam and with the new salary he can support Pam and her Art career

Series ends with the Pam and Jim wedding

I think it's inevitable that they'll end up together...that'd be nice

I don't think I've ever cared so much about a fake tv-couple...this show just sucks you in. I'm glad tonight's episode ended the way it did. :)

Wow, what a surprise ending.

I would give 100,000 Shrute Bucks to whoever guessed that the season would end that way.

<Spoiler Alert for Season Finale>

Did anyone else know Ryan was working on an MBA? I thought he was going to one of those vocational schools. That was a really clever ending, especially how they've been playing up Michael's verbal abuse of Ryan.

I also really appreciated Pam's character development--the writing is sharp. In the one on one camera shots, how she doesn't say "um" or back pedal over what she just said to qualify or diminish what she's just said.

David Wallace's attitudes surprised me. Is it normal to start interviewing for a position before firing whom you're replacing?

The relationships are weird. It's a little bit like how all American sitcoms end up--having a relationship drive the show through the comedy. Friends ended up being like that. I don't mind as long as it doesn't overwhelm the show.

So--we're supposed to assume that Jim broke things off with Karen? He treated her pretty badly; although I'm surprised they hadn't talked through more what would happen if either of them got the job.

This episode was a saving grace after Beach Games--which was boring and kind of a mess.

Yeah - the MBA got him made fun of a bit because he was this fancy college guy while everybody else was a schlub. It really got drilled in the episode where Michael went to speak to Ryan's class.

As for filling a position, I would think that you would want to start interviewing before the firing to minimize downtime, but I wouldn't make it as clear as David thought it was that Jan was being replaced (unless he thought she was so slacking that she wouldn't notice. But, I don't think any interviewer would tell someone who they would be replacing - but it worked for the effect that they wanted.

As for Karen - I think that it is sort of up in the air as to how Jim resolved it, but clear that he did. He was her ride up to NYC and I assume she needs to come home, and he must have said something.

Couple of final thoughts -
1) I never thought a show relationship could get people so caught up. Lori spent all day telling me how excited she was for 8pm. When Jim walked in and asked Pam out, Lori squealed like a high school senior who just got asked to the prom. Wouldn't have thought much of it, but she managed to scare the baby.

2) Next season seems to be building on dealing with the aftershocks of failure. Karen's failed relationship with Jim, Roy's relationship wis Pam, Ryan's relationship with Michael, Ryan's relationship with Kelly, Angela with Kelly's ouster, Dwight with his planned takeover, Andy with his rise from the ashes (I mean he was a Cornell grad in anger management just a few months ago - did he think this would last?), Jan with her sanity, Michael's relationship with Jan and her...changes, etc.

Yeah, I'm curious about how (if) they'll address those questions about what happened between Jim's interview and his return to Scranton. He and Karen both knew that Michael didn't get the job. We can read between the lines that Jim threw his interview, or did something else to take himself out of the running. Did Jim assume that by the process of elimination that Karen would get the job (since apparently none of them knew that Ryan was in the running)?

Ah, well. I suppose I'll have to tune in in the fall. ;)

Are you kidding? Do the names Luke and Laura, Dave and Maddie, Ross and Rachel ring any bells? :D

My three favorite lines from the season finale:

  • Angela: Goodbye, Kelly Kapur!
  • Creed: Swing low, sweet chariots.
  • Ryan: You and I are done.

Good Grief

Speaking of "The Office", just saw this at IMDb:

The Office star Jenna Fischer has fractured her back in four places after falling down a set of stairs in a New York bar on Tuesday. The actress, who plays Pam Beesly in the Emmy Award-winning U.S. comedy, was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan after the fall at Buddakan. Her representative tells the New York Daily News, "She avoided anything scary near the spine and she'll make a full recovery in time to shoot season four of The Office this summer."

^^^
Back injury is pretty serious! I don't know how feasable it is for her to recover in the next few months. Perhap's we won't see her for the first few episodes of the season?

I was just about to say- it's a good thing if you don't know who they are.
Ross and Rachel is Friends, not sure about the other two, thankfully. :)
Ah, I'm showing my age. I just checked your profile and you're too young to know who Luke & Laura and Dave & Maddie are. ;)

10 years.... I wouldn't say that is much older. I figured the 2 couples I didn't know of where from recent drama shows- I really don't watch much tv except for baseball, thursday nights (office, scrubs, 30 rock), and HBO (although all the good shows have ended or are about to end).

What a great episode.

Someone in this thread mentioned before that Michael would not get the job and then pretend like he didn't want it anyway. They guessed so right, but it's not that unpredictable. :D

"I want to squeeze them. It's code, she'll know what I'm talking about."

Per the Wikipedia article that MacNut kindly posted, Luke and Laura got married in 1981. Dave and Maddie were the leads for "Moonlighting", which ran from 1985-1989.
