Well I'll be buying a referb 2.0, those should be under 2k right. Maybe at the dual 1.8's referb price point?

Processor updates are so 2004. Give me new features and usability. That's true power/performance.

Currently on a G4 400Mhz sawtooth with 2 10Gb drives and a laughable 16mb ATI card. I'm looking to upgrade and I'm sure that whatever I get, beit iMac or Powermac, it'll fly compaired to what I'm used to. Saying that, within a few months I'll be wanting the latest and greatest dual core, GPU etc etc. Thats the way it is. Apple is just a computer company, Jobs is just the CEO/spokesman/spindoctor. Things look rosy for Apple in my books, marketshare is up, public profile is up, profits are up. The updates are small and not cutting edge, not anything near what real powerusers need and I can only hope Apple do have a decent gameplan or else those powerusers may switch. We'll see. Come the next keynote Steve will prance on stage with the same old catchphrases, bottle of evian in hand, giving the faithful the same old marketing blub and they'll be here posting 'woot' this and that. For the money I'll probably buy this upgrade PM, back in the early nineties I bought a 2nd hand mac for over three grand, it probably wasn't cutting edge then. Again I've managed to ramble a post with no point, its a natural talent.

Is there a reason???

I want I want I want. Gimme gimme gimme. Apple sucks cause they don't have........Umm...If you want it, go build it yourself! Apple sucks because they only have a 2.7 Ghz G5....can you build one? Let me see it. SHUT UP about what they don't have you ungrateful morons. So what if you think it's slower than a Pentium PC or AMD Processor....the weak link is still Windows. All those processors do is make the PC crash sooner than later.

Tiger a disappointment? "What 200 new features"? Big feature or little feature, it's 200 more than Windows has put out. Sporlight is pretty dang cool, really dang cool. I don't search too often because I figure I can find it faster because I have an idea of where something is, but now I'll search an awful lot more with Spotlight...I'll probably use it even if I know where the file is, Spotlight can find it faster than me in Finder.

Dashboard...hey, it's not the most useful thing, but it's really cool eye-candy, that does have some handy features.

Mail looks pretty cool, I think it's a great idea to be able to view the picture attachments in a nice slideshow....

etc etc etc! It's an upgrade, not a whole new OS. When car makers upgrade their cars each model year, they add neat small, handy features, they do full blown upgrades every 4 or 5 revisions...Hey, just like Apple!!

Is Apple perfect? No, nothing is. Is Apple more ingenuitive than Microsoft? ABSOLUTELY. Windows looks, runs, and works like a computer. OS X works, looks and is a piece of art, something you can enjoy working at for hours. Windows makes me tired.

Be grateful for what you have, or get off your lazy @$$ and make your own hardware, software, revisions, updates, and market trends. Good luck, let me know how it goes.

I think some folks need to keep a little perspective here . . .

Chip manufacturing is hard work. It is not like IBM is producing 3.0GHz chips and not selling them to Apple. When they become available at production-level yields, we will get them.

We have a great OS shipping later this week (for most people). Apple will address the Spotlight/iPhoto issue soon. That's what updates are for.

Apple's agenda is its own. We as users get great benefits from them but Apple also has responsibilities to its employees and investors.

Having said that, here is what annoys me:

1. OpenType, TrueType and Postscript fonts sharing the same name. Is it too much to ask for an OT, TT and PS after the name to differentiate them?

2. All USB ports should be USB 2.0 on all machines.

3. Quicktime Pro should be standard not another US$35.00

4. Update the mouse.

5. Credit the Watson and Konfabulator folks

That's all I got.

I think we should make an official thread to find out why people always see the need to start threads to complain about the same thing... over and over and over again.

We could call it "The official why do people waste time whining about Apple when they could just go out for a walk thread."

Thoughts?

:D

Haha sounds good to me. I am not too upset with the way things are with Apple. I am currently running a 3.0GHz P4 w/HT, 768MB DDR2 Ram, and a 7200 RPM Serial ATA HD with a PCI Express Radeon x300 that I got for just over $500. The reason I bought it was to create video DVD slideshows and I needed power for little money. It is a great little machine besides windows but I am saving up for a PM G5. Even with all the power under the hood of this machine, the PM G5 will likely give me much less headache doing the same thing I do now... and when you are using the machines for hours and hours on end that is well worth it. Sure it may not be top of the line hardware... but Apple never really is top of the line specs wise. What they are the best at is giving a lot of power with less hardware thanks to their great hardware software integration. Would I like to see things like DDR2 and PCI Express on PMs.. sure! Will its absense stop me from buying one... NOPE!

I'd like to be the first one to go against the grain and say that people are just too ****ing hissy fit over Apple not hitting 3Ghz with their PowerMac. I've just had it up to ****ing here with everyone whining and booing at Apple about not hitting the Magical number on their G5. Boohoo Steve Promised 3Ghz and cant deliver... who's fault is it?.. Definitely not Steve's or Apples as far as I'm concerned, people need to realize that IBM not ****ing goddamn Apple makes the G5 cpu. If IBM cant hit the number then be pissed off at ****ing IBM not Apple. As far as the whole ...but Steve promised... ******** you can cram it up all your Asses because you're parents have done that to you, friends and family alike making promises that later couldn’t be kept.

I don’t mean to come off as an ******* here but I'm sick of reading the 10 billionth post bitching about how Apple cant deliver and "what a pathetic" upgrade. Its an upgrade none the less and it falls in line with what AMD offers speed wise on their cpu's and if you know AMD cpu's they work harder then anything Intel offers so don’t go crying to Apple when you see Intel hit 4.2+Ghz and we're at 3Ghz because the G5 works harder then anything Intel could ever dream up.

Anyways that’s my rant for today and as usual I hope no harm comes from said post.

Ditto. I'm really happy with Apple right now... Sure they could beef up the vidcards a bit, but it's nothing to get your underwear/panties in a wad about  I dunno about the human race sometimes, we never can seem to be happy/positive about anything (unless it's sex ;)).

Ok here is my input...

At the moment apple is in my eyes doing really good, but as our french friends said [HardMac] This new update of the powermacs is the smallest ever in apples history....I do find that quite dissapointing for the 'top of the range' mac out there. Look i am in no way thinking of buying a 2.7 dual G5 but i am sure there are some people that are. They are gonna need to fork out $3000, for a 200mhz upgrade....that in my opinion is dissapointing.

But other than that, i find that apple computers and software very attractive. Maybe certain products could receive some upgrades eg. iBook. but other than that it is pretty good.

just to add, Tiger i see as in NO WAY A DISSAPOINTMENT. The thread starter is bringing down tiger without even trying it, and i am guessing taht most reviews he has heard are from people that have illegally downloaded it, that makes me question if that version of tiger might be curropt or who knows what??? Wait until you actually have tiger to give critism!!

My philosophy is this:

Apple is kin to a Mercedes or BMW. Sure it takes them a while to update their product line, but that is why their form factors are so timeless and well made and the resale value stays high.

Apple is the only manufacturer I know of where I can resale my computer two years later and still get a significant chunk of my initial cost back. So what they are not producing disposable computer with the latest fad or month to month specs...like Dell and others.

An apple product is meticulously designed and form factored to stand up against the test of time, just look at the resale value.

That is one hell of a good point... Apple computers are pretty timeless. Powermacs that are over 3 years old are still very very capable machines... hard to say that in the PC world.

Seeing as Apple don't allow clones, no, no one can build one

Who's ever fault it is, 200MHz in god knows how many months is beyond pathetic. Still a very fast machine, but a joke of an "update".

PS. DO NOT start insulting people - "ungrateful morons".

well the clock speed isnt apple's fault, thats IBM's..... but there really is only so much that they can do, it is sad but hopefully progress will speed up, it cant get much slower than it already is

Interesting bend this thread took considering the original post.

The upgrades (or side-grades as I saw someone in another thread call them) are nothing to write home about, but like others have said that's not really Apple's fault.

I think it's kinda funny how in this thread, and others, people who are most likely not video professionals are speaking for that community and saying how people are going to switch to PCs if these "dog slow" machines aren't upgraded real fast. But you know what? Proc speed and the like is fairly low on the list of editors' priorities. Quality of editing software and stability are much, much higher priorities than proc speed. Yeah, cutting your render times is great, but not if you lose time 'cause the machine keeps crashing or the software is so cumbersome that it slows you down and just plain pisses you off.

I've hit a few of editing forums and I saw 2 threads (w/9 or 10 posts - combined) regarding the new upgrades. The vibe was basically "well, that's not much of an upgrade", but I didn't see anyone threatening to go buy a PC.

Of all the macs used in to cut commercials, movies, and TV shows I'd bet money the vast majority of them are Avids on G4's. Why? Because they are proven and running stable all day is more important than running faster but crashing a half-dozen times a shift. Speaking of Avid, when Apple as in the middle of the Great G4 Bog-down, it got out that Avid was going to stop producing for the Mac (I'm assuming because of the hardware slow down). And Avid just about had a riot on their hands. They couldn't back-pedal fast enough and assure people that the Mac was not going to be dropped. Obviously all those editors didn't raise hell 'cause they loved how fast their G4 CPU's were... Maybe that means there's more to real-world speed than ghz... Just a thought...

agreed, quit complaining and get on with your lives, if its a genuine problem then okay....but its not like apple promised updates every six months or whatever, we dont know whats going on over at their headquarters....give it a rest and just be happy that we have a superior OS

People don't pay a premium price for lowend computers just because it runs "a superior OS" (and Mac OS X isn't "faster" than Linux or XP, so there's definitely a need for state of the art hardware to run it). Apple customers are usually very loyal, but perhaps the increased "whining" and complaining means that their pain threshold is about to be reached?

Don't make me bust out my digital camera so I can take a picture of my original Macintosh running Desk Accessories like Calculator and Puzzle.

Honestly. Everything after the Desk Accessories in the original Mac OS is a re-implementation of the same idea using different technology.

Xerox PARC may have had something Desk Accessory-like as well in their OS, but that just further proves my point. Konfabulator and their widgets are not an original idea.

Ungrateful isn't an insult, it's a state of mind too many people in the world are in. Be glad you have a computer, a life, house, internet, and all them niceties you complain about. Moron? That's an insult, and being a newbie, I'll take your advice and tone it down. THANKS!

Settle down. ;) I bought a brand new Macintosh 512k enhanced so I know of what you speak. My point is the look-and-feel with both Konfabulator and Watson. Apple really made no effort to distinguish their product with these 3rd party products.

You're right about the 2.0's and the 2.5's. I suspect that won't be the case with the 2.7's, though. I guess time will tell, but with such a minor update I think we'll have these right away.

The fact remains that dual core CPUs from any manufacturer are vaporware right now.

Please allow me to gloat a bit with my prediction that dual 2.7s would be available right away. :D :D :D

Now let the countdown begin to when dual core athlons are actually available. :p

Hehe, I like my cars and my computers the same way...little, but efficient engine - bolted onto a light frame, outstanding handling, cute, and begs to be pushed hard around the corners. My iBook is kinda like the original Miata in that way. :D

hey a PM is just a good workstation and as it is it can get the work done but you're not going to do Toystory 3 in one of them and you are not supposed to, if you need that much power try this http://www.sgi.com/products/visualization/prism/configs.html

I think it's interesting that those use PCI-X, not PCI-e slots. And to think, people criticize Apple.
