Thank you guys for the reply. I still have not done anything to his phone but now Im wondering what an upgrade to 3.1.3 firmware will do.
Does this act as a restore? Will his contacts and photos still be on his phone after the upgrade? And finally, will the need to plug the iphone into a computer to boot it still exists?

If you upgrade the phone to 3.1.3 it will no longer be jailbroken (as stated above). The upgrade will use your backup if one exists to put your data back on your phone (make sure you backup before the upgrade if there are recent photos and contacts added to the phone). Once you are done with the upgrade you will not have to tether to boot UNLESS you re-jailbreak.

Thank you for your prompt reply. Just so Im clear, the only backup for my friends phone has cydia and blackra1n on it. He backed it up only after it was jailbroken. So when you say:

"The upgrade will use your backup if one exists to put your data back on your phone"

..does this include the cydia and blackra1n that are part of the backup? Or does upgrading the firmware not allow them to restore onto the iphone?

I hope this is clear. Thanks

PS. the only reason I asked is because he tried to restore his phone before but it still required a tethered boot and the cydia and blackra1n icons came with it.

Nevermind.. you were absolutely right with the upgrade. No trace of jailbreak or need to tether boot. All contacts and photos in tact. Thanks again guys!

I checked my iphone's iBoot version today using the SIV method and the control panel method on my windows XP laptop. both of them showed iBoot-596.24

I was expecting to see either 359.3 or 359.3.2 but completely different version. anyone knows if this is a valid version for untethered jailbreak/unlock? btw, my iphone is 3G 8GB 3.1.2/05.11.07

TIA.

You have a 3G. Nothing in this thread applies to you; this applies only to the 3GS.

thelatinist,
do you have some threads regarding iphone 3gs from 3.1.2 accidentally updated to 3.1.3 and how to re-jailbreak it with now itunes 9.1? thanks

I was wondering if anything in this thread has changed w/ any newer versions or methods to jailbreak and (in my case at least) ultimately unlock the iPhone 3gs. The preferred route will be to get an older 3gs so I don't have to deal with tethered jailbreak everytime the battery dies, etc. But if that's not the case anymore and computers would no longer be necessary for this, then I can have one less thing to look for in a used iPhone 3gs purchase.

I have to go research and review some older posts to figure out the other factors to look for in an iPhone 3gs that I want to buy to use w/ t-mobile.

One more question, the iBoot is never upgraded when you upgrade firmware?

Help! How to restore tethered jailbroken Iphone

I have an iphone 3g. Jailbroken. I'm aware that I can't turn it off so I always make sure the battery isnt low. Today, it somehow got turned off. What do I do ? My friend jailbroke it for me using blackrain and cydia. I plugged it into my computer and itunes is prompting me to restore. Is that what I do ? Or should I click on blackr1n? I really dont want to lose all the stuff on the phone (which I happened to me last time) Would really appreciate any help. Thank you

Thanks to thelatinist for starting this thread. From what he posted, I may be on the old bootrom. Surprise. I figured that my phone was too new so it should be a new bootrom. The 4th & 5th digits are "10".

A lot has changed since this was written. You can now jailbreak your 3GS with Spirit without worrying about your bootrom. The dependency today is that you did not update to version 4 of the software. If you are still on 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 you can jailbreak with Spirit and unlock with Untrasn0w. If you did update to FW version 4 you have to wait for new tools.

I have upgraded, but was thinking of downgrading. But, I plan to wait for Spirit for 4.0 anyway. It should be coming "soon".

Rebooting without computer

Hey,
I've read around and have read numourous times that a tethered jailbroken iPhone can restart without a computer (it wont be jailbroken i know that) but this will only happen if certain tweaks are made to the phone. I was wondering if you could list a few types of tweaks i shouldnt use to allow my phone to restart fully and not get stuck on the apple logo...

I have a iPhone 4 on 4.2.1 firmware jailbroken with the latest redsn0w if that makes any difference??
