Someone wanted to cry a river about how "terrible" the M1's performance is with a YouTube video, a bunch came in with contradictory data to someone's YouTube video, and now everyone is butt hurt.

Windows coding is admittedly MUCH MUCH MUCH easier than it is under XCode, almost to the point of being "paint by numbers."
Agree about the coding being easier. I think XCode tries to be too helpful and just ends up being confusing. It could also be my C++ past coming home to roost. I can't stand coding parts of a GUI and then trying to get them to work together with UIButton Actions (it was something like that) and then you forget one and AAAAAAHHHH!!! There is a reason Electron and other multiplatform frameworks are taking over.

Not that I do a lot of real coding these days. The day job is mostly SQL and some python.

I updated the software. And the release notes mentioning better scroll wheel behaviour :D. The scroll wheel problem is well known. Maybe you never used proper mouse wheel.

This mouse wheel is far the crappiest i have ever used.

The main issue with those "multiplatform" frameworks is they are optimized for Windows with everyone else getting a "Tough luck, Chuck" moment whenever a complaint is made about how horrible the framework is for non-Windows.

I would definitely prefer Alderlake + Nvidia RTX 3000 if i could only buy 1 system.
The actual problem of upgrading to Alderlake is the availability of high speed low latency ddr5 memory with Samsung chips. Like DDR 5 5600 cl 36. But you can use Alderlake also with ddr4 ram.

If i upgrade i want only ddr5 to get the fastest performance. Today i saw only DDR5 5200 cl 38 with worse micron chips :(.

This is something that I read about just a few days ago. So, the CPU is fast, but folks are going to have difficulty buying RAM for it that will allow it to hit those highs. Is it more like the GPU’s though, where they’re “not available” but if you order a new Alder Lake system, you can still configure it with DDR5?

Ah the reductive argument trick. Not really the part of your post I as querying...
Look, I too am an IT person and I can tell you… there’s two things that I totally know. One of those is laptop. The other? Desktop. And I’m pretty sure I know them more than anyone over here.

/s :)

You can get only DDR5 4800 with some luck. For higher rated ddr5 up to 5200 mhz cl 38 you will need a lot luck or a crawler. For DDR5 5600 - 6000 mhz i think in most cases an auto buy bot is needed.

DDR5 is much harder to get as the gpus. I got RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 on release date without any pain. I only used a crawler for the 3090. It was not from Nvidia store. I got it from a normal web shop :). I looked for ddr5 the recent 2 days. Only 1 buy was possible. But it was already out of stock, false availability. It was only ddr5 5200 cl38. I had used it until i got faster memory. I saw yesterday evening DDR5 4800 CL40 ram. 32 gb for 369 Euro + delivery costs :D. I didnt buy it because it's far to expensive for this crap ram. You can't resale it for such a price and the 2 - 4 weeks return window is to small for getting a swap.

If the experience is that bad, I would switch. :) I am not doubting your experience. For me, once I dropped my M1MBA it was perfect. And I have used a mouse or two in the last 30 years. ;) That said, someone else in this thread said it worked in Mac fine on an MBP, so maybe we both suck? :D

(or maybe Logitech does...)

Because they dont know a lot about different hardware. They are only focused on their Apple devices. They are blind for other tech. Good for apple but bad for their pockets and technical horizon :).
Says you who has been proven wrong with

- your claims on Linux
- Macbook quality
- M1 performance
- M1 efficiency

You claim to be a pro yet know nothing really. In particular, when asked for proof you respond with anecdotes at best. Nothing even remotely qualifying as evidence. Not the slightest idea about scientific working or methods.

You belittle other users (see quoted post), again making insulting claims without evidence.

You are either incompetent or a troll.

I am a professor in C/S, hold a Master‘s degree, two BScs.

I personally run an Intel workstation, an Intel server, a Lenovo Thinkpad, 3 Nvidia Jetson Nano developer boards, a Nvidia Jetson AGX dev board, an M1 MBP, an Intel MBP. In Uni I work mostly with Xeons under Linux.

How dare you of all people to tell me I don‘t know anything about hardware. How dare you to make a statement like that knowing literally nothing about other forum members. Disgusting arrogance

I buy Alderlake + RTX 3090 with 32GB DDR5 5600 and can only load 3 tabs before it's slowing down. I only buy it for fun, I don't need it... it's terrible system. I have more experience than anyone here ;)

I think you should start a thread titled:

"MacBook pro 16 max 32 gpu will not milk a cow better than a dairy farmer! You should return it"

Easy to tell if someone really knows about laptop desktop or not.
Yeah... it is :D

(I've been paid to administer and architect enterprise networks and our laptop/desktop fleet including purchasing decisions since the early 00s)

Mine just arrived this morning. I'm happy. I haven't heard fans yet despite a time machine restore, backup, install of a heap of apps, and now performing an OS update. Currently running on my old MBA charger because I haven't been bothered to unbox the new one as the MBA charger was already on my desk.

And its now got 100% of battery charge (arrived at about 80%) whilst doing all that in addition to driving an external display for my day job for the past 4 hours on a 24 watt MBA charger.

Look how much beyond Alderlake is over M1 Max with around 11800 points is, nearly 3 times the performance:

M1 with all it's compromises feels like very much overpriced very green banana in comparison. Of course it's desktop cpu, but this laptop is meaned for workstation work loads. So this comparison is very reasonable.
As usual, you don't post all the facts. I think this video that was just released sums it up nicely. And it wasn't even the Max.

Agreed. Been in IT for 30 years myself. No laptop can touch the M1 Max, and that is why I bought it for my workstation for home and when needed portable use. Parallels with ARM windows 11 is great too.

I think its my favourite computer since before I had to accept the inevitable and move from 16 bit home computing to x86 and windows. Accelerated 3D graphics were exciting when they arrived but I dont think I ever really loved windows or x86 cpus. And when I first switched to macs the powerpc was running out of steam and the transition to intel was not that far away. Now finally I have an architecture, power consumption and OS that I love, with added joy due to the great screen and speakers. Happy days, Bill Gates and Intel never managed to completely kill my nerdy love of computers but for many painful years it looked like they might!

As for people that want to talk rubbish about the performance of these machines, how they compare, and lack of M1 apps, I just laugh reading their rubbish and then go back to running 3D fluid sims in Unity (M1 build) using all the GPU compute performance available in this Max.

Now, Apple, please give us back Snow Leopard visual elegance and stability. Would be unbeatable

The display is not the same. It's another display ;). And the ProDisplay XDR costs 6000 Dollars but is it not worth it. Only 576 dimming zones on 32 inch + fans and only thunderbolt connectors :D. Apple overpriced.

Who cares about battery life @ low performance usage?

If you fully utilizing the macbook pro its empty in around 1.5 hours. With hiigh brightness hdr on even less ;).
What are you talking about, my battery lasts all day no matter what I do, 8k video editing, 4k, Lightroom and photoshop. People and their fake news lol.

By the way I use iphone and iPad, these are great mature products, Macbook M1 kind is another kind of story.

Glad you have never seen a RTX 3090 with ~1000 GByte/s memory bandwith. The M1 Max has only 400 GByte/s for cpu and gpu together. Even if it would be fast as 6700XT the 3090 is worlds ahead. For Pros with workstations it would be much more suitable to buy a 24 GB GDDR6X RTX 3090 for the price of a Macbook Pro with M1 Max.
The 3090 also is the size of an entire MacBook

The display is the same quality as Apple's ProDisplay XDR. That's a $6000 display. This alone for me was worth the bump in cost vs. a 13" MacBook Air.

Very large are consistently many times more expensive than smaller ones. They have more surface area for defects to appear, and the market for them is much smaller. Apple seemed to oversell that display a bit as well in their initial comparisons. On a 16" notebook display, it might justify a $300 bump. Also, don't expect identical quality when trying to compress something to the depth of a notebook.

The video shows the practical gaming fps
I don’t know how can you accept that but I cannot. There is no way to call it Max when the old version gaming fps is 300% of it. I doubt M2 Max or even M3 Max can catch it up after like 3, 4years. You deserve much better this if you bought the Max.

I hope this post helps you to make laptop decision.
