Did they fix spotlight?

In Tahoe, when I do searches, say for a filetype, it doesn't completely work. I have to do the stupid thing in preferences in safety and security to rebuild spotlight everytime.

And of course I rely on this basic function all the time.

Someoene PLEASE tell me spotlight works properly again.

OP:

Forget about spotlight.

If you want better searching, use both of these two small, FREE apps instead:
EasyFind:

Find Any File:

Try both of them.
You'll come back and thank me for the suggestions...

'find any file' is great when i need it (it searches places spotlight doesn't go, so should be used with care when deleting files. i only use it when i need it (mostly, am using spotlight).

It’s really really hard to find file searching apps on macOS that don’t rely on Spotlight. The two that were already mentioned are about the only two there are. I’d love to be proven wrong.

isn't 2 enough? 'find any file' is great, i've used it for years, helped immensely when i need to go beyond spotlight's capabilities...

Since I haven't had any problem with Spotlight, I can't say whether anything has been fixed. However, there are certainly enough anecdotal reports of problems with Spotlight to suggest that it falls down under some circumstances.

Pinpointing what those circumstances are, is the crucial step.

Maybe start by reducing the selected search categories in Settings to "Documents", and removing all others. Then add one at a time, testing for a day before adding the next. FWIW, I have unchecked Calculator, Conversion, Definition, Siri Suggestions, and websites.

If you want better searching,
EasyFind is good, but can take a while to search large numbers of files for contents; whereas Spotlight is instant.

I have had no issues typing a file extension into the search bar in Finder and the filter for that filetype immmediately showing up. I don't remember it offering the file extension as a specific search option prior to 27, but I could be mistaken...
