I am getting a "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)." error msg whenever I try to copy files from my Mavericks Mac to a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) external HDD that I haven't opened since 2012.

I also cannot open my Aperture Library files stored in this external HDD and get this error msg "Aperture cannot access this library. To use this library, make sure its file permissions are set correctly."

But when I copy the Aperture Library File from my external HDD to my Mavericks Mac it opens after I updated it to Aperture 3.5.3.

Check the permission of your ext HDD. Make sure that you can read and write on it with your current profile.

I thought of that and made my current user account, staff and everyone have Read & Write privileges.

I even checked the box that is for Ignore ownership on this volume.

When I click my iPhoto Library it request to upgrade my library from 2012 and proceeds to do so until an error msg of Unable to write to library “iPhoto Library”. Check that you have permission to write to the library directory. appears and I am forced to cancel.

Did you apply that ownership to all enclose items? The disk permission may different with that folder.

I did so and Staff and Everyone are Read Only.

Whenever I try to eject the external HDD it takes a long time and Mavericks eventualy has a popup that says it is taking longer than usual to eject the disk and if I want to Force the ejection.

When I do not want to eject the disk and instead shut down the Mac it takes unusually longer to shut down eventually having me using the power button to turn off my Mac.

Is the error from Finder, similar to the following screenshot?

If so, the error:

• relates to the file system
• may occur with a good file system on a good drive.

Use Disk Utility to verify (not repair) both HFS Plus file systems. Do they appear to be OK?

Does Disk Utility show S.M.A.R.T. status as verified for both drives?

I have the same problem, disk utility cant even verify the disk. Any help will be appreciated

I was trying to copy the "Install OS X El Capitan.app" file from my ext HDD (NTFS) into my MacBook HDD that I got the same error as you.

Solution:
I compressed the file into a 7z archive (ZIP didn't work), and then copied the 7z archive to MacBook's HDD with no problem.
