I was helping friend install windows 8 on his mac and when i tried to go into the start up menu by hitting the option key it didnt work. I also have a mac and i use the option key all the time and it works. i also tried the other keys like S ,command r and none of them worked on his mac. He has an old Mac from 2008 but it runs well. my question is why are the start up keys not working and how can i get into the start up menu? Thank you very much

    hmm, should be alt.
but perhaps if you installed windows without using bootcamp windows might overrule the startup keys ?

Did you verify those keys work once booted into OS X? It could be that grid of keys have failed.

Alt/Option, same key. It used to have Option on it some time ago.
