Well, mate, you know best. If the MBA is fast enough for you, I'd say it's the best choice. Sell both of them, and get the $1800 MBA.

If you feel you sometimes need more power, trade both of them for a 13" MBP. Based on your needs, go for the 2.26 one or the 2.53. I'd recommend the 2.26 one, the processing power should be enough, and if you upgrade it to 4GB/RAM and a 500GB HDD, you're getting a Mac with a bigger HDD and the same computing power for the same price.

Will 12" Powerbook users accept the new 13" MBP as their replacement I wonder?

The new 13" MBP is the closest Apple has come yet to enticing me to replace my trusty 12" PB. Finally, built-in firewire! And the SD card reader is a nice touch. But I'm most interested in the unibody enclosure, it looks it can withstand the rigors of traveling. However since I'm in no rush I may wait a revision (or two) and see what upgrades come along. If the model takes a step backwards (which Apple sometimes does with their "upgrades") then a refurbished unit will entice me.

More to the point, my 12" PB has been a great portable machine for going on 6 years. I'd only replace it with something that will provide the same usefulness and longevity.

Im planning to get a Powerhouse Mac Pro when i go to University, and will be getting a MBA to accompany it, i wouldnt need the DVD Drive, hopefully have the new battery by then, bit more power, its all i would need.

I think the pricing of the Air has a lot to do with the OP's decision. At $1499, the base Air doesnt even come close to the specs of the base MBP at $1199. Plus the ability to easily perform hardware upgrades makes it a very attractive option.

Basically it comes down to portability + style, but sacrificing performance for the weight difference.

Depends on how you look at it. Most people who don't have a mac pro are probably thinking they wouldn't need the heavy lifting because they have a mac pro, so why not get the air.

People who have the mac pro may need the processing of the mac pro, but mobile sometimes. Thus the 17 macbook pro.

Then people who use the mac pro for heavy lifting, but just want a commuter laptop to show off work and do some non heavy work would get the air.

I fit in the latter group.

Yes, for sure and the 17" is a stunning machine for anyone who needs the screen real estate and power on the go.

I'm really surprised the 15" didn't get more votes, just because of the screen size and resolution alone, it's not 'that' much larger/heavier than the 13" and has higher power options like the Mac Pro owners probably like :)

Perhaps the thing I'm not realizing is how much of an instant success this new 13" MacBook Pro is. Hadn't it been introduced in June the 15" MBP would of likely received many more votes, no?

how about the plain 13" MacBook? (non-unibody)

I was going through this whole thread, wondering if anybody said that, and if they didn't, I would've suggested it....

Then I also wondered why the OP has a 15" MBP in his sig, and a MP in his sig.

But, I guess he got a 15" MBP.

13"

I have two MP's for ILE, yet Ilove my 13" MB because it travels anywhere and it's Speck shell case lets it bounce!

I started with a C2D black Macbook, then bought my Mac Pro about a week later (2.5 years ago). Afterwards, I sold the blackbook and bought a Penryn 15" MBP because I wanted aluminum and a little more power. I greatly missed the size of the macbook though, and as soon as the 13" MBP was announced, I bought one and sold my 15". I totally love the 13" MBP, especially with the built in SD card reader; worked great on vacation last week. Along with MobileMe for screen sharing, syncing, back to my mac, etc, they're a great combo. I bring my 13 to work, and grab stuff off my MP at home all the time.

Macbook Air, small, powerful, and light. Has a great screen. Fashion statement? More for the casual user with a other beast computer {like you with the mac pro
Cons- Lines in most screens, virtually non-upgradable.

I'd get the MBA as well - any power tasks can be done on the MP and any light surfing can be done on the MBA.
