If you're referring to how it reverts to the default keyboard, I'm pretty sure in this case it's intended behavior and not a bug. Apple doesn't want the third-party keyboard process to be able to load when the phone is locked, period.

It's a security feature. Same thing happens when you enter a password in a secure web form: reverts to the standard keyboard.

Swiftkey is working like a gem on the new iOS 8.3 Betas ... and yes I love 3rd party keyboard for two things only :-

1. Flow/Swiping
2. Additional dictionary like "Hinglish" which the stock keyboard is a pain to type in

Did they change something in the API ?

- General slowness to load.
- stuttering animation / no animation when keyboard appears.
- keyboard randomly not loading at all or reverting to default keyboard (especially bad in Spotlight and Messages)
- Keyboard reverting to default on a thread-by-thread basis in Messages.
- Keyboard locking up the Messages app completely.
- Inability to leave reviews in the App Store.
- A host of little glitches when browsing the web and using various third-party apps.

This is a fantastic summary that mirrors my experience. Every version of iOS8 has improved things a bit, and we're getting close to things being reliable in iOS 8.1.3, but I still have the same issues you do. The most common issues I find are Messages freezing up, arbitrarily making me use the 1st party keyboard at times with no way to swap, spotlight issues, and issues with quick reply on SMS.

I still use a bunch of 3rd party keyboards, as I find them more accurate than the defaults. My favorite is SwiftKey right now, but I also like Fleksy and Minuum. I think both of those have promise.

There are many issues with 3rd party keyboards:

- Slide to reply from lock screen unlocks the phone, takes you to messages and sometimes not only does the keyboard not come up but the messages app won't respond to touch which forces you to force quit and open.

- Sometimes when you go to the messages app the position of the screen is incorrect and you have to scroll down to the bottom manually to see the latest message. (This happens often)

- On some websites the Go/search/done buttons do not work at all with 3rd party keyboards.

Agreed, these are all real and annoying issues. You just described a very specific scenario earlier and I was clarifying.

I don't understand why Apple couldn't just have improved their native keyboard as well.

The one little thing that would make a huge difference to me would be quick access to punctuation. Just about every other keyboard for Android or iOS lets you hold the period key to get access to all the common punctuation. The iOS keyboard forces you to bring up a different text entry mode entirely just to insert a simple comma. It's very annoying.

The spacebar being too short in safari is another issue. Makes you enter periods all over the place like in google search

"how.do.I.stop.this."

The point about third party keyboards...

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who does this :)

If you turn of ALL other keyboards including the built-in Emoji one, you gain a little bit of space since the globe icon disappears, but it's still pretty small.

I get this all the time but don't remember problems in iOS 7. Is the space bar shorter in iOS 8?

Never happened to me

Your muscle memory of where the spacebar is may be different :p

I keep trying to train my mind to tap further to the left when I mean to press space rather than exactly in the middle

The period key in iOS 7 wasn't next to the spacebar as far as I remember.

Pretty sure it was the same in iOS 7 (as I recall complaint threads about it from back then as well).

Well, the pic below is supposed to be iOS 7. The period is not there.

It's there mainly when you are in places like the address/search field in Safari, for example (basically because for URLs you'd typically have at least a few "dots" that you'd need to enter).

I'm under the impression Apple changed something in third party keyboard support API in iOS 8.2
I'm experiencing a far better usability since iOS 8.2 installation with Swype.
