The Prisoner.

I also have to wonder what a David Lynch version would be like.

Slow and boring with weird music?

A show about a guy held captive in a nursing home?

Heh-heh. Well, you're on the right track, sort of. Did Number 6 ever escape from the Village?

We-e-ell...it depends upon how you look at it, doesn't it?

Exactly. The entire series was so enigmatic and ambiguous, including the ending. Maybe the Patrick McGoohan character escaped. Maybe he's still trying to escape. Maybe he was never a prisoner in the first place. The possibilities for a real sequel, and an intriguing one besides, are almost endless. But a remake? Ugh.

Apologies for reviving a slightly dead thread, but...

It's official – The Prisoner is back! It's now been confirmed that Sky One will be broadcasting a new six-part series. And almost to confirm that the success of a reinvented Doctor Who may have influenced the decision, Christoper Eccleston has apparently been linked with the new show's lead role...

As somebody already said, it's the result of a complete and utter lack of ideas, and it's pretty bloody awful, too. Really, who can play the prisoner besides patrick? I don't even want to think about it.
Yikes...
I can't believe they're going through with this.

Why do people always have to remake great movies and tv shows and completely butcher them?
.

I'm not saying every remake is bad, but really, how can you make The Prisoner better than what it is? You can't it - they should accept that and come up with an original idea

it's kinda like James Bond - They should have just stopped after Diamonds are Forever, and then we wouldn't have any cheesy Roger Moore or dull lame Timothy Dalton movies... but then we also wouldn't have Octopussy...

Oh yeah? What kind of quirky car does he own then? I mean, the lead actor has to bring something to the opening credits, right?

"Eeeeeeeviiiillll!!!"

Ack! there's a talking bear kissing Grandpa!

This is who is rumored to be the star, Christopher Eccleston

And dear god the producer likens it to 24:
"The Prisoner is like Pandora's box - it's the ultimate conspiracy thriller," said Damien Timmer, executive producer of the show.

"Like 24, the new series will entrap you from the opening scene. We hope it will tap into this iconic show's existing cult following, whilst creating a whole new generation of fans."

It's more likely to send the show's existing cult following running for cover, in hopes they never clap eyes on the remake.

It's been a long time. Saw "Secret Agent Man" in the US back in the 60s. Used to be one one my favorite weekly shows. I like the way he retired and then bamb... drugged... kidnapped... and wakes up on the island as No. 6.

Ok here is my thoughts on a remake of the prisoner. He is no longer a spy. He is Steve Jobs. Steve retires from Apple... is kidnapped and wakes up on an island prison. They try to get him to devulge Apple trade secrets. But who kidnapped him? Is it Apple? Is it Balmer of MS? The island is filled with former dotcomtechies who are all held prisoners.

Egads! A thread about "The Prisoner" and I missed it up until now? How'd that happen?? (Frank Black waves sheepishly at Thomas Veil...)

I must admit right now that I'm skeptical. I'm a lifelong fan of the original series.

Careful Number 2, you can be replaced.

Who is Number one?? ( I just had to ask...)

Someone in Concord Mass. has one of those Lotus Kit cars, very similar to what Patrick McGoohan drove on the show. I've seen it parked in the area of Concord Center a few times. Nice silver color. The car always draws a crowd wherever it is parked, with most people wondering what it is. I don't think it would be much good in a New England snow storm though.

Yeah, but who wants to see an 80-year-old man running from a balloon? ;)

Since it has been confirmed as official, the best we can hope for is that they actually do something good & creative...more of a Tribute than a Remake.

Personally, my hopes would be that Patrick is retained as a consultant ... and also makes an appearance or two, at least in the first episode.

Scene fade in...

Its an idilyic tropical island (Tahiti?) that was in the brochure that PM had in his room before he was kidnapped.

Leisurly pan/zoom to an 80-year old man lounging in the shade by the beach (guess who? :) ). He's being visited by a middle-aged man dressed in black who has apparently come to visit him - - and while the old man is quite irritated that he has been finally found, he warns his younger counterpart of the dangers of trying to quit the business.

Scene changes...

The (new#6) is on the run...

Scene changes...

The (new#6) is on the run...

fast cut

A kidnapper at the old man's Tahitian beach hut...finds an empty bed.

Scene changes...

The (new#6) is on the run...and he gets caught (of course).

darkness

(Voice#1 {new #6})
"Where am I...?"

(Voice#2 {Number 2})
"You are at the Village"

(Voice#3 {the old man})
"You won't break him..."

(Voice#2 {Number 2})
"Ha Ha Ha Ha ..."

lights come up...

We see New#6 and #2. No sign of the old man or if he was present, or merely a thought that was in the New#6's head.

If we're stopping that early, stop with OHMSS. Diamonds are Forever barely feels like a Connery Bond.

but then we also wouldn't have Octopussy...
And you're saying that's a bad thing?

Octopussy was one of the better Roger Moore entries in the series. (my own opinion.) But, for the most part, Roger Moore just seemed like he should have been having tea with the Queen or something. Interestingly enough, I have always heard that he was Albert Broccoli's first choice to play Bond, but at the time, he was bound by contract to "The Saint".

Timothy Dalton only played Bond in two movies, both of them snoozers.

So, who's the best Bond bad guy? Of course, Goldfinger (German Actor Gert Frobe) is the first one most people come up with. I agree, he was good.

Jonathan Pryce was great as Eliot Carver in Tomorrow Never Dies. ("He can topple governments with a single broadcast") Gee, an ultra-rich megalomaniac, out to bend the world to his will.... Good thing it's only fictional.

I'm not sure how our discussion turned Bondish (not that I mind), but I thought Christopher Walken was good as Max Zorin in "A View to a Kill". He was nice and creepy. And if you ask me whether I mean the actor or the character he played, my answer is "yes". ;)
