How bout up top below the top line and above the app (ala phone call bar)? When you're in a phone call and you press the home button, a green bar appears with time on call and you're able to press it to return to the call. How about that area for notifications? Seems like a perfect idea to me.
That would work great while I am on a phone call, or in Safari, or playing with another native Apple application.

But what about when I am playing Flight Control, a time based game where speed is crucial and it takes up the whole screen?

What should be done then?

Like I said, Pre's notification system is great.

But to implement it on the iPhone means one of two things:

1) EVERY Developer adjusts their app(s) to leave room for that bar at the top.

2) Apple some how handles it by either shrinking the game window, moving the game window, or having the bar appear on top of the game when a notification comes to the phone.

#2 would piss off a lot of people playing a game like Flight Control or Ms. Pac Man.

So I guess it would have be be #1. I guess that's possible???

How about Apps such as games would be handled differently. Just like Youtube, where you have the option of reduced screen or full screen, games would have the same option. When in reduced screen, you would have the bar, but when in full screen, if an alert came in, it would reduce the screen slightly to reduced screen and show the alert. You could probably live happily with that. :)

Or have the notification appear in the top bar (maybe next to the bt icon as a badge) then while in the app you could click on the menu bar and get some list as to what notified you.

Great for Native Apps. :D

Sucky for full screen games since that top bar is non-existent. :(

i have faith in apple that they will figure something out. with all those expert programers working there, they have to come up with something pretty slick. i mean, look at the iphone. if they got this far, they'll make it past push notes.

If the user is given the option. One can easily design a program that doesn't give the user the option - so it's up to the developer.

That's not true. Every App will have push notification settings if push is written into the code.
