Man I generally agree with what you say but seriously??

I'm all FOSS all the time and I will have (for my wife) an iPhone SE because it's an attractive phone in nice colors packaged in a reasonable size. The SE really is good stuff if you want a small attractive powerful phone.

I'm not trying to begrudge your purchase decision, ostensibly based on color and size. It just seems to me that you are giving up a heck of a lot of technology and paying more for it. But my wife could care less about technology so I understand. She's happy with her non S iPhone 6 and doesn't have any desire to look at anything else.

There are plenty of phones 1 or 2 generations old that trounce the SE. I don't think there are any 4" ones, so if having a 4" phone is ultra important then the SE would be a decent choice, although iPhone 5's are probably dirt cheap and offer similar functionality if cost is an issue.

She has an S3 Mini right now and doesn't really want to go much bigger she's 5'2" and ~100# soaking wet it's an attractive phone that fits her and that's the issue with most phones anymore.

I hear you, my wife is 5'3" and 98 lbs, she loves her non S iPhone 6. I tried to get her onto a 6s+ but just seeing how ginormous it was in her hand squashed that idea very quickly. She actually prefers the 6 over the 5 because of the larger screen and has become quite good at using it one handed.

I think the idea of the SE would have appealed more to me if Apple had made good use of bezels. I don't think the goal should be a 4" screen, but rather the largest screen you can get into the footprint. That's why I was bummed to see Apple used a 3 year old case instead of taking advantage of technology and getting a larger screen in there.

Moto X Pure, Nexus 6 (kind of).

I love the SE though, I'd totally pick one up if I didn't like large screens.

EDIT: and of course, this issue is so subjective. Some would prefer the Pure or Nexus for the front facing speakers or QHD display, while others wouldn't because the camera can't match the iPhone. I love all three phones I've listed though, they're fantastic and I doubt anyone would have many complaints with these phones.

Even the 6S was essentially the iPhone 6 case with faster internals too, and one could argue much the same about the Galaxy S6 - S7.

The SE fits a niche, one that Android doesn't. There are no 4" Android devices with 2015/2016 flagship SOC and rear cameras. The closest is the Z5 compact and it's still 4.7" which would be more comparable to the 6S.

My guess is, it will probably goes one full version ahead cause of the A9. Or simply what Apple feels like restricting the 5S to.

You can't compare used prices against new retail. That's not fair. If you did, I can pick up a mint S6 Edge for €380 here compared to €749 for the S7 Edge and the user experience is much the same ...

It's also a little ironic of folks to say that Samsung deserve kudos for listening to ITS audience and giving them the device they wanted.

I am quite sure that many iOS users wanted the iPhone 6/6S updated hardware and memory in the 4" form factor and were peeved when there wasn't that option. Heck the forum was alive with frustrated users after Apple increased its sizes. So essentially they have now listened and given that audience what they want. 6S speed and internals in their preference, a 4" size / frame.


I do not understand the mentality on this forum that folks seem to think every device any company launched is FOR THEM. As if its merits are only valid if it appeals to them. It's much the same as the 'entitlement' generation. Whether you or I like a device or not, whether we're the target audience or not, it doesn't negate the fact for many people it may be exactly what they are looking for and at $399/499 it provides them the most affordable entry into Apple's smartphone lineup. Whether you think it's value is justified, does not mean it's not worth it for others.

That would be a shame. I feel like the difference between the a9 in my 6s and the a7 in my iPad air is quite significant

I'm already very reluctant to upgrade the air to ios 10

That's my point, and that's a mint one. I'm seeing them on Swappa for $120 on up. They have the same screen, same PPI, the SE is brighter so maybe it's nicer in sunlight. Nicer camera on the SE. Those things may very well be worth paying 3-4X the money, but mostly I see people wanting the 4" screen and not necessarily caring about specs.

But you COULD pick up that s6 edge and have almost all the functionality and save a ton of money. That's the point being made. Don't get me wrong, I'm on the other end of the spectrum and will spend much more money for just a little bit of added functionality, making me less than the smartest buyer out there.

I don't think anyone thinks the device is launched for them, I simply think that users (myself included) opine when the phone released doesn't suit their needs. I don't think it's the most affordable entry into Apple's smartphone lineup, but I understand your point. But this entire thread is about the justification of the value, the ultimate justification being sales numbers. To throw out the ones who are arguing its value is to ignore the vein of the thread.

2 generations old means no more updates so those are eol devices. I guess the galaxy s6 makes a good argument but the se will be relevant much longer if you care about software

The SE will be supported with OS updates for many years, much like any other Apple device. I don't know why there is suddenly this insinuation that this wouldn't be the case when there is no history to imply this.

No you are right. There are great arguments for the SE, and certainly cost doesn't factor into everyone's decision. If I needed a 4" screen and it absolutely, had to be the dimensions of the 5/SE and no larger then I suppose I'd be buying a SE. I'm mostly just disappointed in the use of old technology, can you imagine how small the SE could have been with smaller bezels? Or alternatively how much of a larger screen they could have fit into the same size package?

Kind of weird, but in the 90's I used to LOVE small phones, the smaller the better. Man I used to love the V50, it was so small it fit into the little subpocket of my jeans. Sometimes I think how nuts it is that I carry around a Note 5 and how humungous it is compared to that little V50.

I'm mostly happy they just made a premium smaller smartphone, I hope it can spur to android manufacturers to do the same (while addressing the bezels) perhaps bring the LG g2 shape back.

On Android you basically have to gophablet to get premium now, with the exception of the gs7 regular

Certainly cost would have changed if they retooled a completely new phone. No, the more I think about the more $399 seems like a pretty decent price for what you get IF you just have to have a small phone. I think I'm just jaded seeing what even $100 can get you on the used market, although that's not the type of buyer I am anyhow.

But this is mostly used tech\design sold as new retail.(best way I could put it).

Look at the Moto X PE .. $399 for 16gb, only $50 more for 33gb, and $499 for 64gb .... which includes a 5.7 Quad HD screen, 21mp camera, 5mp front camera, Fastcharging, Front facing stereo speakers, water resistant, and etc. Yea it came out about 6 months ago, but I can still buy it brand new for the prices mentioned above.

Apple is just asking to much from someone that's not dependent on their ecosystem. What legit excuse(besides greed) do they have to not start with a 32gb option, or include that option after the 16gb, just to have such a similar experience in a 4 inch screen?

The only reason I wanted the SE is cause my 5S 64gb is in bad shape and I rather have my second line as a differ mobile OS. But that doesn't mean I'm going to settle with Apple's lack of options and BS pricing for what it's worth. I'll most likely end up getting a used mint 5S 32gb for about $250-$300.

Yes I understand 4 inch iPhones are in demand, but the SE is basically a 5S with a bit more horse power running it. As a consumer, I don't care about Apple's bottomline or strategy, I care if the purchase makes sense to me. I was already on the borderline of purchasing, but the lack of the 32gb completely kill it.
