So as of 17:30 there were 8 people in line in front of the Regent street apple store. The first three had the fold-up chairs and were talking to curious passers-by. Number 8 was the well-publicised PA who had been paid several hundred pounds to queue up throughout the night so that a mother would be sure her daughter got one on her birthday as promised. She (the PA, identified as such due to her too-small t-shirt saying PA) was both very pretty and very, very bored. Everybody else looked happy and excited.* If anyone else has updates later today, please let us know
I was there at 6.30pm and counted 5 and that's including the PR people (I thought they were the media). The first 2 were in deck chairs and looked like they had been there for days. Was gonnna take a pic but was too embarrassed I spoke to one of the Apple guys and i don't know what he was on. He was saying that by tomorrow there would be queues around the block and that it was gonna be the biggest launch in Apple history bigger then the iPhone. I pointed out that there were only 5 people outside, he then said that they were expecting 20,000 and that they would all flock to Regent st after midnight I knew he was having a laugh when he then said that 3 only decided today that they were doing a micro sim tariff for the iPad. At the point he lost all credibility as this was announced 2 days ago I'll be there 6am.
And here's me sitting in the warmth of my home, playing with my iPad which I Pre ordered and UPS were so kind as to deliver it to my door. hahaha.
The publicity re: the woman can be found here: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2989878/iQueue-for-you.html?OTC-RSS&ATTR=News and cwedl: you're probably right but due to the scruffy nature of everyone around her, she stood out. Was also too embarrassed to take pic of the line. I'll be there at 6 too.
i love the way theyve paid to be one of the first..... apart from the how many thousand that were delivered today!!!! hahahahahahaha for once money cant buy something
God i love home delivery mine is about to hit 20% power and i am warm and at home who thought that they would need to go to a shop to get the thing
The launch in NYC was a piece of cake. I had pre-ordered but cancelled it when I realized that it would be delivered when I was at work -- and that I'd just end up in another line of people at the FEDEX distribution center. I thought the line would be huge in Soho. pfft! There were 70 people in line and when they opened the store I was in and out with my 3G iPad and Apple case in literally 15 minutes. By the way, I got in line about 10 minutes before the place opened at 5pm--no overnight stay for me. So, you might get lucky at the store itself. I think it took awhile for people to realize they wanted one. After launch, I've read that its been very difficult to obtain one anywhere here.
Out of interest, can you preorder in-store at Apple shops? I've preordered from a Premium Reseller, but I don't know if this is an option at the official stores. Also, if I preordered, I assume I won't have to queue tomorrow?
Ive been saying this for ages, the hype for the iPad will start after tomorrow. Its mostly the hardcore people that will be getting one tomorrow (myself inclusive). I mean a lot of people got theirs from the States cos they couldn't wait for the UK launch and the majority pre ordered online. I'm pretty sure if you want one tomorrow you will get one but doubt they will last till next week. Most people would rather try before they buy and as of today they still don't have any display models in the Apple stores. That will change tomorrow.
Here is a link with pics of the first 2 in the line at Regent St http://www.electricpig.co.uk/2010/0...ive-gadget-fans-first-taste-of-apples-tablet/
Yet, that mother could pay several hundred pounds extra to get an iPad. She'd fly to the states to get one...
got to love the Lego iPad unboxing. Any more photos or updates? Don't envy anyone staying out overnight in London.
What I want to know is where is the cat's entry in the credits, it starred in the video, it deserved an entry!! Alec
Yeah that's true, but perhaps she heard about it after the media coverage had started to build, don't forget there was only the 10th May that people had to pre order to guarantee delivery for 27th/28th May....
Have fun with the launch on the other side of the pond! I do agree with getting it at launch...the hype only gets worse haha
That guys gut is taking up half the screen.....bobandy style (for those who don't get the reference, google trailer park boys)
Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3G: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16) Arrived at about 5.45 this morning and there's at least 100 people in front of me, maybe 150!
Got here at 6, were about 125 in front, would say there is about 200 now... These queues need portaloos!
