Because they want to prepare us for being screwed. That is the ONLY reason why they've leaked this.
Think about it.
This should have been the iPhone on its tenth anniversary, but instead they want to sell us a new super-expensive phone on the tenth anniversary of the iPhone. The former you would expect the price to be inline with what you might normally pay for an iPhone 8, the latter is being billed as a 'new' product where they can charge what they want.
The difference may seem subtle but it's their way of justifying this 'new' extortionate price.
Like many of you, I love Apple products, but I've come to find myself disliking Apple as a company more and more over the years - for the simple reason that they don't really care about us, they care, first and foremost, about screwing every last penny that they can out of us.
I hope I'm wrong about this...
