Because they want to prepare us for being screwed. That is the ONLY reason why they've leaked this.

The BBC said:
  • a reference to iPhone X, which acts as fresh evidence that Apple intends to unveil a high-end model alongside more modest updates to its handset line

Think about it.

This should have been the iPhone on its tenth anniversary, but instead they want to sell us a new super-expensive phone on the tenth anniversary of the iPhone. The former you would expect the price to be inline with what you might normally pay for an iPhone 8, the latter is being billed as a 'new' product where they can charge what they want.

The difference may seem subtle but it's their way of justifying this 'new' extortionate price.

Like many of you, I love Apple products, but I've come to find myself disliking Apple as a company more and more over the years - for the simple reason that they don't really care about us, they care, first and foremost, about screwing every last penny that they can out of us.

I hope I'm wrong about this...

what? This new device is gonna be everything the community asked for. Almost no bezel, sexy new design, wireless charging....What more could you want. Price has always been super high at apple.

Take the tin foil off the head, climb out of the rabbit hole, and don't pontificate so much about why the leaks happened. It won't change anything and it won't benefit your life in doing so.

It is not Apple's job or mission to cater to any one person. Apple is about trying to reach the masses. And even then, there are going to be people who don't like the product at all etc.

And in my opinion, life is too short to be hating a company that doesn't fulfill your every desire of whim. If Apple doesn't make you happy, move on.

but this “X” should have been iPhone 8.
and should have been sold at the price of iPhone 7.
Because innovation is like this. As technology advances, you get better products for the same price.

I want it to be the iPhone 8 at iPhone 8 prices (which are higher than the competition as it is).

Not a new 'class' of phone named something else so that it can be priced ridiculously.

Quite right. But I'll vent, and let others know how I feel - maybe it will sway them one way or another as well after having their own suspicions/thoughts confirmed like this.

Except now the after digging into the A11 Stroughton-Smith is thinking it’ll be a monster of a chip. 4 low power cores plus 2 high power cores all independently addressable (not virtual or just one or the other). So it’s a true 6 core beast with power savings. This device just may be worth what we think they’re going to be asking.

Sure, but apple asks more because they can. Prices are bad, but product is usually good with apple.

It's up to you if you find the product worth the price. Buy something else if not.

Agreed. Technological advances should be exactly like we see advances in processors etc - they get better every year while staying around the same price point.

But will it be worth that premium? Processors are always getting better but we don't get ripped off (in the same vein) by Intel.

No factory worker is going to know the upcoming iPhone's price, therefore it wasn't a factory worker that leaked it. Only ones left are upper management.

I agree with the thread topic creator's hypothesis.

The A9 already has still been holding its own against all the new competition. This chip is looking to be magnitudes faster. Not just 1.5x. They’re thinking more like 10x. Intels best chips (let alone an entire computer) aren’t cheap by any means either.

Then it should have just gone into the iPhone 8.

Apple are in the business of making money. Whether we like what they charge or not, we all have a choice. Don't like it, don't pay for it.

I know they didn't announce official pricing yet, obviously. But what's the rumor..how much more supposedly is it over a plus iPhone ?

$100.00? More?

I think some of the chin reveal leaks were absolutely controlled leaks to get you used to it so you don't feel thrown off by it.

But I don't think the GM leaks were controlled at all personally. Gruber thinks it's a rogue apple employee. Some global security twitter anon thinks it's a carrier or partner that got the links shouldn't have and leaked them ASAP.

I don't think the GM leak was intentional because it contained so many details

I'm all too curious how TUESDAY will pan out now. 90 percent of stuff feels out in the Open now.

There’s also no way in hell Apple was thrilled when the GM wallpapers leaked,

it wasn’t by coincidence they left the retro apple rainbow logo ones + flower/gradient color ones/OG world throwback ones out of the DP’s and PB’s

Last minute surprise wallpapers are one of the more exciting things to lackluster major version iOS release updates in my opinion, as cosmetic as they are. It defines the iOS version

Unfortunately this is just the natural progression of things now.

Bigger better phones cost more than they did 2-3 years ago.
Look at the Note 8. That's £869 I think?

Same with footballers (albeit on a larger scale), now being sold and bought for £200,000,000.
The highest used to be around £80m not that long ago.

That's what most of us will be comparing it to - the Note 8.

Will it be a better phone/similar features/lacking perhaps... we'll find out on Tuesday I guess

What are you whining about? We have known the basics for months now, this leak only confirmed what everyone who was paying attention knew in June. Your conspiracy theory makes no sense either.
