We were just told the real reason why AT&T won’t be supporting MMS on the iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G S at launch, and you’re going to laugh… Technically it will work right away our ninja tells us. The are no extra plans or higher fees we’ve just learned (the unlimited $20 package covers unlimited SMS and MMS), and the reason it’s not good to go right away is because AT&T has to manually remove all the “Opt Out MMS codes” on each account. Basically, if we were to summarize this, and we’re going out a little bit of a limb, remove the Opt Out MMS code, and MMS will work with the final OS 3.0 build right away. Who wants to try it with the GM 3.0 build just released?

We’ve also just heard that tethering will be 100% locked out at launch, but AT&T’s in the process of putting together a $70/mo unlimited data and tethering plan. SMS and MMS will not be included in that plan, we’re told.

lmao

well at least ATT are not going to charge for MMS, as soon as I saw delay i figured they were working out pricing, i was hoping this wouldnt go unanswered for too long

there is still no option in the GM release for MMS - so that answers your question no?

boy genius says its because att has to manually adjust everyones account to remove the block put in place for mms.

Actually, I think we will. Notice in the article it says unlimited covers SMS and MMS.

To those saying that any other carrier would charge the same as AT&T, this may be true but ... If multiple carriers were carrying the iPhone, I guarantee you'd see some price competition.

Competition is good, it forces down prices. I think Apple has had enough and we will be seeing the iPhone unlocked in the US by the next iPhone.

I'm sure AT&T will fix this before 3.0 comes out. That would just be PR suicide.

They could easily write a small program to fix all the accounts, which is how they probably blocked them all in the first place...

You're obviously not a software guy ...

I don't have the MMS OPT OUT on my bill (just checked). I wonder if it's because I have the unlimited text package for our entire family plan?

Either way, here's hoping that this is accurate and I manage to have MMS enabled on Day 1.

Other carriers would probably give you the same pricing.

Please give me the option to find out.

Their ninja told them...

I don't trust ninja's, they flip-out and kill people for no reason.

Hey:p

Forestall and Schiller took 3 or 4 digs at AT&T during the keynote over the MMS and tethering debacle.

Good. There is some hope.

That's all I want, competition. Let the prices crumble.

I don't know much about their systems, but reason says if they can do it automatically one way, they should be able to do it another.

My guess is the MMS option becomes available around August 1st. Really, At&T does suck-They have know since March(probably even earlier) and still are not ready

You do realize that you can always call in and have the CSR remove it for you so you have working MMS from day 1, right?

Also if you go into an AT&T store to buy your iPhone you can have them remove it at that time.
