The iPad mini has the same amount of pixels as the iPad 2 except the screen is only 7.9" meaning it has a greater ppi of 162. It may not be at the retina level, however the improvement difference between the iPad 2 131 ppi and the iPad with retina display 263 ppi.

This leaves another question to all of those wanting a retina a iPad mini. Apple cant just double the ppi like they did with the iPad with retina display or the iPad mini would have an ppi of 322. A screen like that would be a production nightmare.

The iPad mini with retina would also have a host of negative impacts like the 3rd jen iPad had comer to the iPad 2 and the mbp with retina compared to the mpb with out just for so extra pixels that wont be that noticeable.

Dont hold out for a iPad mini with retina... THEY ARE NOT COMING.

There is a common assumption that for the mini to get a retina display it will have to match the resolution of the full size iPad. This really isn't true at all.

They could simply increase the current resolution proportionately to achieve approximately 263ppi. Something in the range of 1650x1235 (not exact by any stretch) would get there.

As long as the aspect ratio of the display is the same, images can be scaled down without any noticeable change in almost every case. It doesn't have to be a perfect half or quarter to work.

With the expected increases in graphics capabilities, a standard A7 chip could likely handle the increased resolution without adding on additional graphics capabilities.

If Apple doesn't insist on matching the resolution then I think a retina display mini is a possibility in the next generation. It would be odd if they did match the resolution really, because then the display on the iPad mini would be a higher PPI than both the iPhone and the full size iPad. This would make little sense unless they intend to increase the PPI on those products as well.

It will be extra work for the developers if they don't keep the ipads on the same number of pixels.

One reason I like the mini is it works well with all the older apps.

I am very happy with the current iPad Mini. If/when the Retina comes, it will be great. And even on the slight chance that Apple does not make one (which I don't think they'll back out of making one), I will still be very happy with the Mini the way it is.

It will probably be between this

iphone 5 resolution
1136-by-640-pixel resolution at 326 ppi

and this

ipad 4 resolution
2048-by-1536 resolution at 264 pixels per inch (ppi)

This leaves another question to all of those wanting a retina a iPad mini. Apple cant just double the ppi like they did with the iPad with retina display or the iPad mini would have an ppi of 322. A screen like that would be a production nightmare.

Prior to the iPad 3, a retina screen with those specs was a production nightmare.

It won't matter if the Retina Mini has a higher ppi than the ipad 4, Apple will just call it Retina and regular consumers won't notice the difference. Its not like it will be instantly noticible like the iPad 2/iPad 3 screen upgrade.

The iPad mini with retina would also have a host of negative impacts like the 3rd jen iPad had comer to the iPad 2 and the mbp with retina compared to the mpb with out just for so extra pixels that wont be that noticeable.

If Apple released the 3 with a relatively weak GPU, they won't have a problem releasing a Mini 2 with a relatively weak GPU.

And yet HTC managed to mass produce the One which has a Pixel density of 468ppi. The one Mini screen is 341ppi and the galaxy s4 has 441.

The premise on which your entire opinion and thread is based on is wrong.

There are at least 4 NEVERS you can rely on with 100% certainty regarding future Apple products:

1.Random "experts" speculating on a rumors website NEVER know exactly what Apple will do in the future. NEVER.

2. Those that spout off about something NEVER happening NEVER come off as smarter than the people they think they are educating. NEVER.

3. If/when they are proven wrong, they NEVER come back for the smack down. NEVER.

4. They will NEVER be correct in guessing that Apple will NEVER do something because Apple will likely be making products long after they die, so the product that is supposedly NEVER coming might in fact come after they take the big dirt nap.

*BONUS*

MacRumors tried and true recipe for braised crow...

1 cup <insert product name> will never happen
3 cups exclamation points
6 oz of "mark my words", finely chopped

Fold ingredients into a long post, simmer 6 months until rumors bubble.

Remove from oven on launch day of <insert product>.

Serves one OP, if you can find him.
