The displays at least on earlier Touch Bar MBPs felt quite flimsy to me, but it hasn't seemed to be a particular issue before now... I wonder if the screen assembly is different despite it being the same chassis since 2018/2016? Or maybe a different glass is being used, or they've had a bad batch of glass.

I have AppleCare+ and will deal with Apple accordingly.

Yeah, now I am rethinking my not getting AppleCare for the Air.. I still have time to make the two hour drive to the AppleStore to get it checked out and AC+ added.

You shouldn’t need AppleCare. That is for accidental damage. This is a manufacturing defect covered by the warranty.

only when Apple finally acknowledges this, hence the "gate".. as of now they requiring people to pay up front. I didn't get AppleCare on this machine as it served two purposes. I was able to dump my 2017 macbook pro back on apple in an even swap. It was supposed to be a 6-8 month interim machine until the macbook pro was released. Now I am wondering if we will see macbook pros in 2021 because of [insert excuse here].

The "thinner" the screens/top cover get, the more flexible and fragile they become. The more likely they can be damaged even by [what would be considered] "normal" movements.

The cover/display on my 2010 MacBook Pro was thicker and more robust. It's held up well over 11 years.

If there are problems with the m1 MacBooks, I predict it will eventually be recognized as a design failure -- same as with the disastrous "butterfly" keyboards.

If you want "stronger", you need "thicker" (even if "not that much").

Apple is probably still investigating this new issue so it's not a coverup yet.

Yes and that’s Apple’s problem not the user’s. Apple have a legal obligation to sell products fit for purpose. A laptop that is too fragile to open and close at will is not fit for purpose. It’s just a matter of how many customers Apple wants to create hassle for before they finally admit their mistake.

The cracks radiate from a central point over the camera area. Looks like the typical cracks that happen when those sliding plastic camera covers are used. It doesnt close the macbook all the way at the point and when the macbook is put in a bag, the screen bends and cracks like that.
Apple even has a whole support article named “Dont close your MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro with a cover over the camera“.

I fix computers for a living; one time I had a 17 inch HP laptop where all the lady did was open it up and the left hand attachment point to the hinge crumbled where it attached to the LCD back cover. Plastic attachment point on a metal back cover. Had that happen on two or three MSI gaming laptops, too.

I wish they'd just make them thicker. And bring back bigger screens. 18" or bust.

Given that the article does NOT quantify how many people have experienced the issue (and only provides 7 examples in the article), calling this any sort of scandal is overblown fearmongering and/or throwing shade at Apple. Unless you start seeing these issues occur by the hundreds, there simply isn't enough information at hand to determine whether this is a widespread issue or not.

there are just users who tape around the facetime camera and shut down the lid...
simple, it happened to some of my workers 2 years ago...
Physics dont lie, people do

why no travel with the 24" imac then? in train, planes , cars you have power outlets. This can be you...why 18" when you can have 24"

agreed. give it time to see if a meetoo movement gels. the butterfly keyboard started the same way..

We already know the next MBPs will have a new design, with a new screen and display enclosure, so whatever issue may or may not exist in this generation is irrelevant to the laptops coming out next year.
