Or perhaps the user could just unlock it themselves from the iCloud control panel? That's another option. :)

I like this.

Unfortunately iCloud devices are a bit wonky. I sold my MacBook air and I still see it on my iCloud; even when I select "delete" it lets me know that the next time it is turned on I will see it again. This, however, would be an easy fix. I am not sure what Apple's logic behind this is.

Maybe it's a bug, but I agree that doesn't make much sense!

He never said it wouldn't be on iPhone, just not on the iPhone 5S, which I agree.

I think Apple will just expand Passbook features in iOS 7.

The reason I think so its because Apple will introduce a new design for the iPhone 6 (2014).

I personally believe it will be the biggest change since the iPhone 4.

iPhone 6 will have an all new design, larger screen, a virtual haptic home button that replaces the physical one. Apple will incorporate a fingerprint scanner that way and the new design will be compatible with NFC.

The fingerprint scanner hidden seamlessly behind the screen that works through "slide to authenticate" would be amazing when tied to Apple's mobile banking solution, which is on the way. There are a ton of patents coming out of apple lately that tied together in certain ways can bring some really disruptive changes to certain industries. It's just a matter of when it happens.

Just to clarify the passcode for OS X can be reset through the recovery partition or an install drive of the OS that's on the unit. A firmware password is written to the board, and the logic board would need to be replaced to remove it. This is the type of password you have to prove ownership to Apple and have them reset it. It's a long procedure. If Apple did a type of firmware password to the phone, that was unbreakable (i.e. you can't DFU the phone without the firmware password) they would need to implement a procedure for Apple Retail stores to unlock firmware locked phones quickly. While I do like the idea, it's unlikely they would do this, as people who locked their phones but never registered them would have a hard time proving ownership leading to all sorts of issues for both them and Apple.

Do you think the rumoured Fingerprint Scanner in the upcoming iPhone 5S will be a novel and practical innovation, or will it just be a useless gimmick? Would you use it?
I don't know if I would use it, but to me it means Apple is going to take more risks and (in my opinion) that's a good thing.

Few smartphones have a fingerprint scanner and none of the high-end, popular smartphones have a fingerprint scanner.

If Apple is really going to add a fingerprint scanner to the next-gen iPhone, it means they are going to take more risks. They are going to (try to) be innovative.

I believe its the Atrix that has one, but incredibly poorly integrated. No thought whatsoever to ergonomics. Having one built behind the screen and making securing a message, payment, unlock, etc the same "swipe to unlock" motion would be an almost magical implementation. All the extra security with out an ounce of unfamiliarity.

if it will eliminate the swipe+passcode hassle.. then yes, by all means i want the fingerprint sensor.

If fingerprint scanner is implemented with the care and protection it deserves we're good. Apple can surely use the fingerprint scanner with practicality

Reports are that the sensor is under the home button. Is is a great idea and will serve to move them onto NFC seamlessly. I'd love to get rid of passwords.

. There is still that mystery cut out in the upper back right (opposite camera) that I think will be used as the FP scanner. And I also believe that any FP scanner implemented by apple will much different then anything we have seen in the past.

My top reasons for why it would be great for apple to add this to the iPhone.

#1 faster and more secure than typing in your password. Expanding into enterprise is a major priority for apple right now, Samsung is trying to get a piece of the action with their new "Knox", but the addition of additional hardware security will keep apple more attractive to industry than those developing software solutions
#2 for the App Store- no more stories about kids buying absurd amounts of in app purchases
#3 add NFC to the phone and make credit card purchases truly secure
#4 imagine being able to use your iPhone to authenticate your login to your account login on your macbook or Mac desktop
#5 airdrop on the iPhone- currently you need to approve airdrop on the Mac, if it came to the iPhone in iOS7 it would presumably still require authentication- using a reliable and successful fingerprint scanner would make secure file transfer easy enough to promote adoption of mobile airdrop

the reason current fingerprint scanners are not liked is the required 'swipe' that often requires multiple attempts and becomes more of a hassle than just typing in your password. The rumor as I understand it would be a non-swipe fingerprint reader built into the home button. since you already use the home button frequently it wouldn't be a big adjustment to just hold your thumb there for a second when a password prompt comes

Where?

I love the iOS 7 presentation yesterday and it gives me more confidence in the fingerprint scanner being included in the next iPhone. I think this is the one feature that's making me wait for the next iPhone instead of getting a 5 now.

Imagine: unlocking your phone and buying apps, music, etc. all with your finger! That's what I'm hoping for.

The only thing I don't understand is how Apple will prevent someone from using your phone when you're asleep or something like that.

So... don't remotely lock your phone and forget the password. That's pretty simple, no?

That won't help with anything. People thought the blacklist for us carriers would work, all it does is the thieves sell the phone before it gets blocked and they get the money, then the person who bought it gets blocked from using the phone so the thieves win

you think its a good idea but truth be told, when i had my motorola atrix 4g it had fingerprint scanner and it worked 3 out of 5 times you do it. If your finger is sweaty, it wont work. I liked it for the first day then i turned it off and never used it agian on my atrix
