It doesn't depend. All this is socialist non sense and the cause of your frustration. The govt needs to be sacked, not backed.
When I said it depends, it is that import tax varies depending on the product. Electronics are taxed at 60% over the price of the product plus freight. There are also other taxes on top of import tax. The Brazilian tax system is very complex, and it is not "just" 60% over the price of the product.

As for the "socialist nonsense", I wish it was that simple. Brazil has ever had very high taxes much before the first left-wing government took office. Both right-wing and left-wing governments have something in common, which is keeping taxes high and raising them even more, either for protectionism of local industry or for spending tons of money to fund social programs and local companies and to keep a huge bureaucratic structure.

That’s why many buyers come to Miami and buy them here.
I live in Orlando and constantly see the big tourist busses making day trips to the Apple and Best Buy stores. A lot of the foreign tourists (mostly from South America) love buying their tech toys while they're here on vacation because of the price difference between here and their countries.

Correct. Apple store Miami Beach is popular amount the foreign tourist. When I was younger and flipping iPhones growing up/living in Miami was an advantage. I had many customers in Colombia/Brazil/Venezuela. Of course the hype has died down past few years. Was a good fun side hustle for me. I remember when the first gold iPhone came out. That day I made about $5,000-$6,000 in half a day. That gold iPhone was wanted by so many.

Well, the new Arm-based Macs are also impossibly expensive here in Brazil. Check these prices:

Mac Mini starts at $1,614 (higher-end model at $2,078)
MacBook Air starts at $2,411 (higher-end model at $2,987)
MacBook Pro starts at $3,209 (higher-end model at $3,673)

And that's without even counting any extras. Brazilians will once again be left out of the party.

In my poor country in Central America an iPhone 12 starts at the equivalent of US$1,150 (64GB) and the iPhone 12 Pro starts at US$1,400 (128GB).

I checked and a lot of countries have the same or even more expensive pricing. Best to have a contract(though locked).

This doesn't sound like an Apple issue, but a governmental/taxation issue. Apple doesn't offset it's pricing for governments with high import/tariff taxes. Nor should they. I'm really sorry you guys have to deal with the high taxation in your country. 🤷‍♀️ Prices some people right out of an excellent phone.

Hong Kong is the best comparison in the world when comparing iPhone prices. It has no trade barriers of any kind and is a free port with no taxes.

  • iPhone 12 (HK) = $875
  • iPhone 12 (US) = $829

  • iPhone 12 Pro (HK) = $1,099
  • iPhone 12 Pro (US) = $999

So Apple charges 5-10% markup outside the U.S. Anything more, blame your country.
