I think part of the problem also is that it's so new and futuristic and so similar to what you've seen in so many mockups that you really need to get it on your phone in person in reality and try it out.

I think people are forgetting that modern [graphic and UI] design is headed toward flat designs and minimalism. The older icons looked more polished because they have a ton of skeumorphism and all kinds of glossy effects added to make them look like bubbles. In 2007 when the iPhone was first released, design was full of gloss and drop shadows and complex things, now, it simply isn't. This is Apple keeping up with the times and trends of design, and I welcome it. iOS is getting very stale and looks nearly identical to how it did in 2007. Stop being afraid of change, Apple would eventually lose a lot of customers(myself included) if they didn't update the UI in a significant way.

Flat designs and minimalism can look finished. Look at how Windows 8 / WP does it. That looks finished.

I despise the Newsstand app. It looks awful and I can't even delete it. More importantly, it adds one extra barrier to The Economist app. Incredibly irritating for something that serves no function.

At least the new one loses the horrible colour. But frankly, I just want to delete it.

To be fair, if the Economist app used the auto downloading properly then at least being in Newsstand would serve a purpose.

Agreed, but it's difficult to go from seeing an overly complex icon/logo(such as most of the current icons) to a minimalist icon in the same vein. They end up looking unfinished because you're so used to seeing the icon with all kinds of details, and now there are none. We'll all adjust, and I'm sure some changes will be made prior to release.

I'll give you that.

These days I tend to use Safari for most of my news intake. Clicking through bookmarks to access the BBC, Guardian and the like is easier than separate apps. However the Economist app does everything I want, perfectly. Only it's behind that stupid Newsstand icon.

Perhaps it'll annoy me less with the redesign.

I certainly agree - it's going to be something to stomach.

i absolutely love the new ui and all the new features, literally now comes with everything i used to jailbreak my phone to get, but i hate pretty much all the icons apart from photos and game centre

I hate the safari, newsstand, and music icons.
Game Center actually looks quite nice.

The only thing I dont like is how gamecenter is glossy and the rest arent...surely gamecenter should be flat, like the Photos icon

Please stop using that word. You know what word I'm talking about. You have no idea what it is or why it even exists other than you saw it online and now you're throwing it around like you know something.

You can have flat and modern with effects. It's done every day.

I absolutely agree. I really like the overall functionality and UI of iOS 7.

But they did a bad job with the icons, like really? Even I can do a better job at designing better Flat UI icons. What were they thinking?

The icons that i cannot stand are:

-Photos
-Camera
-Reminders
-Stocks
-Newsstand
-Settings
-Safari

Also, did anyone else feel like the back arrow button in the UI was too big compared to the text?

These icons look like they were done years ago. Nothing modern about it. It's very much possible to make a modern looking minimal flat UI.

I beg every single developer to complain to Apple about the icons! Please share this with any developers you know who feel the same!

Not a fan on those new icons either… Hope they improve it a little by final release

I think it'll be different before the GM release.

Only if enough people complain to them about it. I like everything I've seen so far except the icons. Flat is one thing but these are just cartoonish looking. I thought the ones on Android were bad...

It's all growing on me to be honest. I hate the game center icon, but it's way better than before, the camera icon doesn't seem to fit in and I have no idea what's going on with the compass, but to be honest the rest (even safari) aren't that bad.

Plus I use chrome.

The one I really don't like is Settings. I don't even know what it's supposed to look like. Nothing, I guess?

Also the extremely big circles in the Store apps, they just look out of place.

As many, I love almost all the changes they made, but the icons are just weird, and in some cases, ugly.

I think Jony Ive is an incredible designer, but sometimes I think the genius was in the combination of Jobs and Ive together. It seems that so strong personalities and opinions don't do well when alone, and need a counterpart.

The Safari icon actually looks very nice, IMO. The low resolution image you're using doesn't do it justice.

No no no, those icons simply won't do! If I was heading up apple I would have rejected them immediately, most of the icons I dislike compared to the ones I do like. I've seen mockups with better icons.
