The search bar is missing from the Finder

I don't know how to bring it back.

Right click and choose customize toolbar. Drag the search back to the toolbar.

Edit: And get rid of those ?'s by dragging them to the trash.

I thought it was command-drag or control-drag, and just off the toolbar, not necessarily to the Trash.

That's correct. Command-drag them off the toolbar. They don't go to the Trash.
