Lots of chatter recently about the PS6, lately its the it will include a detachable disc drive. One of the rumors it seems that the console will see the light of day in 2027

EXCLUSIVE – PlayStation 6 is Planned to Have a Detachable Disc Drive on Launch
PS6 – Everything we know about the PlayStation 6 so far
PlayStation 6 And Handheld PS6 Release Dates Might Have Leaked
Great! Great that those who don’t need an optical drive and prefer a lighter machine, will be able to also save some money! And great for those that still buy their games in BluRay, so they can keep playing their disc-based games!

Hopefully PS6 keeps editing their games in physical format. I can foresee that once they go all in with digital, the sales and price drops we see on PSN could disappear. Actually nowadays on the PSN I don’t see as many sales for some AAA first party digital games as I used to see when I had my PS4… but there are still good discounts. Control Ultimate Edition is at 3,99€. If you still haven’t played this AWESOME game, now’s the time.

EDIT: excuse me, I thought I was on the PS5 thread. Now I see this is a whole new thread for the next gen!!! Great, count me in!

EDIT2: hey @maflynn do you think we could pin the main console threads such as the PS5 thread, this one too, and maybe if there’s an Xbox and Switch threads? That way the main console threads would be easily accessible on this subforum…

I'm gonna wait for the PS6 Pro cos it will be more expensive
I waited for the PS4 Pro and ended up disappointed. I now waited until the PS5 Pro and, while it’s a great machine, it’s way too big… and the difference with the regular PS5 may not be as big as I thought. Yeah, it has great Ray Tracing and I can play with RT at 60fps, that’s why I bought the Pro and not the Slim but… I think I’ve learned my lesson, and for the next gen I’m going for the regular PS6, which hopefully will offer good Ray Tracing while also offering good performance.

I'm just a lowly member, just part of the unwashed masses such as yourself - I cannot pin anything :)

Yeah, I know you’re just a mere mortal now like us… but maybe, if you think it could be a good idea, you could send a message or two to whoever can do the magic. If they agree, of course…

From all the tech news I have heard, it is aiming to give a BIG boost to Ray Tracing and Ai. It will also be cheaper but less powerful then Microsofts 'Very Premium' next console / PC hybrid thing that is rumoured. I'll grab a PS6 myself.

Yeah, I’ll try to sell my PS5 Pro in the right time just to be able to get a PS6 to myself.

I wouldn't be in a rush to sell the ps5. Amd and Playstation recently shared tech insights into the new console. The reason they did so this early is for developers to start familiarising themselves with the new architectures.

To take advantage of the tech, games have to be rewritten or optimised for it. Therefore on launch day, there will be ps5 title thet don't run better on ps6 pro bevquse thy have not been written for the new software and hardest architecture.

The experience can be similar on PC. There are 10 year old games that run worse on my pc at 4k than new AAA titles because they don't support dlss or Ray tracing but instead use older less efficient technologies.

If the ps6 plays Playstation, many pc and xbox titles, there will be little incentives for Sony to price it low.

Even if they price it low, they could increase the price of Playstation plus by $5/month to make up the difference. That would yield an extra $70 per year per console which over 5-10 years would add up.

Pricing will consider supply chain, tariffs and exchange rates. They likely have a target but will unlikely finalise until 6 months from launch.

My guess regarding price is that… they tested the waters with the PS5 Pro at $700/800€, and they have seen low sales, so I don’t think they will risk going as high with the base PS6.

However, I think it will definitely be more expensive than the PS5 at launch. So yeah, a $600/700€ price makes sense.

Yes. Don’t want to make it too expensive or else people won’t buy buy it. That makes me wonder whether they will keep PS5 pro available but at a much lower price. A two tier approach like MS did with Series S and what Nintendo are doing by keeping switch 1 available for cash strapped buyers. There are many Xbox one and ps4 customers who haven’t upgraded.

Interesting news if this rumor turns out to be true, though at this point, I'm having a hard time believing it - given how life has gotten so expensive.

PS6 Price Leak Reveals It’s Much Cheaper Than Next-Gen Xbox Console
I would fully believe that leak for now, it seems very possible we will be looking at a 1000 to 1200 dollar Xbox and a 500 to 600 dollar PS6. In the UK they and Europe they will need to be careful with the pricing as the economy’s are not doing amazingly still. Don’t forget also Sony will most likely sell the console WITHOUT a disk drive and instead offer it as an add on if you want to buy it.

The economy is a factor but a bigger one is roblox, tiktok and minecraft. That's what gen z enjoy doing for fun. Sonic, Mario, masterchief and snake mewl little to them.

When I was young, consoles were the only source of interactive media. Today it's one of many.

Pricing ps6 too high makes it less financially viable for parents to buy as birthday or Christmas gift for a child.

Wonder if the current BD Disk Drive will be compatible with PS6…

I doubt it because Sony never keep the same design for more then one gen. And it is designed to fit the PS5. Although they could always include a different cover to match what ever the PS6 looks like I guess?

I have another topic to speculate about the PS6.

I think most of us agree that integrating LLM into video games to generate content procedurally (like dialogues of NPCs and their behavior, adding a touch of unpredictability to games) could open new creative doors in video games, right?

Do you think this new PS6 architecture with communicated GPU cores could act both as a classic GPU and also as an AI engine, similarly to how Apple is starting to use their A19 GPU cores as neural engines?

Or do you think PS6 will be a still classical game console while video games slowly adopt AI and LLM technologies and integrate them into actual games?
