i generally never use over 50% of my 256gb ssd. Mainly use it for coding and UI/graphic design. Most apps are webapps via electron like vscode, figma, discord, etc. and the browser of course. Only time i handle large files is when i download a movie via torrent.

So why is apple scamming us base users with half the speed!? Would I notice this anyway?

There's no releation between your modest storage needs and the speed issue on the new M2 MBP & MBA models.

The speed issue only affects the 256Gb models and comes from Apple's decision to use a single 256Gb chip instead of two 128Gb chips. This decision very well could be soley due to issues with chip availability and the need to streamline parts inventory.

i guess you would notice it when swap gonna kick in

max tech showed that 256 and 512 hadnt the same responsiveness (m2)

and yes it kinda feels like a scam ,but there's no need to cry about it,just get a m1 with 16gb for the same price and enjoy cooler temps and faster everything lol

You post sucks, And so does your technical worry about the SSD transfer speed. There is going to be little to no difference for the variety of Random reads and writes that occur very slowly in comparison to sustained large file transfers. It will be beyond fine for your Electron development needs, and other interests.

I don't think it is a scam but it is deceitful as it undermines the enhanced performance that people would expect, and Apple touts, as a benefit of these M2 devices. Apple should not have done this to its customers. Whether you notice it or not depends on your usage and really is not the point. You buy a device for its capabilities.

8GB in the base models is much more of a "scam", like as in "planned obsolescence."
yes and no ,the 8gb M1 air is decent imo for the price, and performs extraordinarily well ,even better than windows 16gb I think, and even better or at least as good as them in multitasking (which kinda is the point of ram ain't it )

u think apple gonna drop 8gb laptops soon? idts

First you don't need to buy it so it is not a scam, YOU HAVE A CHOICE. Yeah it sucks, but still YOU HAVE A CHOICE.

Second stop making dumb clickbait titles, this isn't newspaper site. Also enough review on YT, stop being lazy. Accusing of someone to be a scammer but ever looked in the mirror...

No, it's very unlikely that you would notice unless you sit there with a stop-watch, or unless you run long processing jobs (which you say you don't).

I have several computers, one with storage ranging from SATA speeds (roughly 500 MB/sec tops) to PCIe 4.0 (6000-ish MB/s on paper). It's basically impossible to tell which drive I'm using at any given time, and this is a machine that is used for large software builds and database testing. I can tell which drive is hosting the test database if I run a 3-hour-long test suite (the PCIe 4.0 drive comes in a few minutes ahead of the SATA drive).

The angst over the slower SSD is misplaced, IMO. Sequential transfer speeds simply aren't the long pole in the tent.
