I’m so annoyed, why would he tell me to do that, he said it would speed it up but I could care less as I only use it for kayaking but now I can’t even get a full day on the water out of one charge anymore. Anything I can do?

Security wise the tech was right to recommend this.

Did they upgrade it or did you?

And when did you do it? Was it in the last day of so or much longer?

They did, I don’t have my computer hooked up yet just moved and it was a few days ago.

It can take a week or two for the device to finish all its optimisations, which will rapidly drain the battery.

I would give it 2 weeks and see how it goes, but maybe raise it with the reseller in the meantime?

What does Battery Health report? (Under Settings / Battery)

No, there is nothing you can do; no, so-called “indexing” won’t help either. There’s nothing you can do other than buying a new iPhone because downgrading isn’t possible. They did it? Wow...

Why does everyone push for you to update to the latest software? It’s planned obsolescence, I’m so pissed.

It's not planned obsolescence. You're using a 6 year old phone - you can't even get half that in support on an Android device without it being a massively outdated security nightmare.

Try putting it in low power mode when you're out on the water. Have him replace your battery if you're adamant about keeping it, but honestly, you got some serious mileage out of that phone. An upgrade isn't so far fetched.

i own a 6s.
battery life has always been an issue. from 2015 onwards.***
i am familiar with the issue you mention.

i have had the battery replaced 1st time before the low-cost battery replacement program began; and a 2nd time during the low-cost battery replacement program.

battery life decreases every year.
but isn't that normal? i have learned how to maximise battery life on this phone.
(i hike a lot: when hiking i turn off cellular, which doesnt affect GPS, etc etc)

when updating iOS a few months ago, i too had an overnight dramatic charge life.
but within a few days it regained some.
now, with iOS 13.5.1 and the iOS battery health features and knowing my usage etc etc, i am actually getting more battery life now than i was getting maybe about 3 years ago.

you should understand that, if what you say is true, "now the battery lasts half as long" that its a temporary issue.

*** i love the 6s. i have learned how to care for it. i have learned how to maximise its battery life. i love its size and its especially its weight.
i want to keep it until 2021 September! and apple is doing as much as possible to allow us 6s users to do just that.

if you are an outdoors enthusiast, here is how to maximise battery life while you running, hiking or other such activity:
- turn off cellular
- turn off bluetooth
- turn on low power mode
- make sure ALL yr notifications do NOT go to lock screen (other than emergency notifications). don't have yr screen light up needlessly. have your notifications go to Notification Center.
- turn off background updating except for apps such as maps, weather
- have yr activity related apps use apple's Health data related to activity (running, walking, steps etc) and have yr activity/health apps read the data available from the apple Health app (in other words, limit the non-apple apps from needing to calculate activity - let them get the data from apple's Health app)
- turn on Optimized battery charging, and give it time to learn yr usage, charging, and sleeping habits.
- take advantage of google map's off line downloadable maps. uses a lot less battery and still continually updates yr position via GPS even with cellular turned off
(- if you can find one, the apple made Smart Battery case is the best slip-on battery case for the 6s. also invaluable if you really do a lot of outdoor activities or need to be continually using the web on yr 6s all day)

lastly, definitely get a Mophie small and light extra battery to ensure you are not stranded, so that you are safe, no matter what. apple specific ones even have Lightning cable built in.

if all the above is not worth doing by you, then unfortunately you need to upgrade to something like the new SE.

my battery health is 79% which is really bad, but with the above, i am able to go on 30km walks and long hikes.

How so? You had the option to ignore the tech recommendation.

Not sure what's the big deal here. You came to a shop, a tech recommended you to update your iOS, and yet despite you seemingly not having any issues, you decided to do it. Why?

As for battery, how old is your 6? I believe Apple changed the scheduler on iOS on the newer versions (starting with iOS 12 I think?), and the older phones simply might be having a hard time coping with the new scheduler, especially with old batteries.

Check your screen brightness, and how long it takes to turn the screen off when not used. The update might have changed these, and they have a massive impact on battery life. Next check in Settings the power usage of various apps and take note of what uses a lot of battery life. Some websites are quite awful and empty your battery in no time.

Apple will often deny service for any device that does not have the latest software available to it. This is because they want to eliminate outdated software as the cause of the issue. So if you refuse to update, they can consider it a software problem and not something they need to fix. In order to be a licensed Apple service provider, the provider must follow Apple’s service rules.

Why was your phone being serviced in the first place?

As others have said, the iPhone 6 is pretty old in terms of smartphones. When was the last time the battery was replaced? What’s the current battery health?

There is a bit of planned obsolescence in how these devices are sold, but to Apple’s credit, the iPhone is the least offensive at this point with their extremely long support tail.

The drama around the battery was because Apple was trying to save phones from random shutdowns. The bonus out of that drama is that Apple is doing even better at being transparent about it all.

Yeah good point. I do keep it on low power mode, still tight. What would you suggest upgrading to? I want something cheap for being out on the river, maybe a used 6S?

The new se is very good. In fact it should be noticeably faster and more battery efficient being a new chip. I wouldn't expect the physical size of the device being very different either.

Nope but if the user has a 6/6S case, it won’t be compatible for the SE/8/7 line

Yeah was not trying to spend nearly that much, as like I said I use it exclusively for being on the water

Like you have a beater phone specifically for the water or this is your only device that also goes on the water?

If it's your beater phone, just pick up the newest device you can in your budget. iPhone 7 or 8 would be the sweet spot. If you don't want to spend much, try replacing the battery in your 6 with a fresh one.

Absolutely understand if you don't want to spend lots of cash on one, but if it's your only smartphone that also happens to go on the water, I'd personally just accept a little higher cost and get an SE, XR, or 11 non-pro and know I'll be set for years to come. They're pretty severely water resistant these days and can survive drops into river with nothing on them. A good plan would be pick up a dedicated waterproof floating phone bag or case to use when you're out there and use your main device. If you drop it in the drink, it'll float and you can just grab it. Obviously a more expensive solution, but just throwing ideas out there.

Yes it will

Depends on the case, but most of them won't work. The camera moved a little bit starting with the iPhone 7 I believe. So most iPhone 6/6s cases don't fit on the newer iPhones (7/8/new SE).

Now when case makers updated their cases to fit the iPhone 7, most of them made the camera opening big enough to still work with the iPhone 6/6s. I don't think much has changed since the iPhone 7, so most cases that claim to work for the iPhone 7 or newer will actually fit all of them (6/6s/7/8/new SE).

I just purchased an Otterbox Symmetry for the iPhone SE and put it on my wife's old iPhone 6s that we handed down to her father (who finally gave up his 5s). It fit perfect.
