So with the iPhone X, when playing video, or zooming into photos, it seems that notch at the top is going to be in the way. I would not like to be watching video with that notch sitting on top of the side of the video. I really need to mess with this phone in person to see, but the notch seems awkward. Otherwise, I think the phone is really nice.

I feel like for the majority of videos there is going to be a black bar on either side of the video in landscape, as the X aspect ratios are a little odd.

I agree though, it looked weird in full screen apps during the keynote when it showed playing a game and some of the navigation was behind the notch.

Yep I noticed that with the game as well. Very odd considering Apples attention to detail that they would have something like that sitting on top of games, videos, apps, or photos.

No video, no evidence, no believe in what anyone says about how videos look with that black bezel. I know how the iPhone simulator looks, but I want to see some live hands on video!

There will be a lot more information and Demo's coming in the next Three to four weeks. I look more hands on videos as well.

Three to four weeks? I can pick up more than one Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus in that time. I still can't believe out of all the people who got "hands on time" with the new device, nobody spent any time with the status bar and seeing how location services and bluetooth change the status bar.

Consider this. Palm's designers were better than the current iPhone design team.

PreOrders start October 27, so in between time, there will be more hands-on demo's. Ask yourself if you purchased a Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, would you be content with it or regret not waiting.

it was too difficult for Tim Cook to use his little brain and have those notches ONLY for status indicators

In my opinion, the notch should have extended across the top of the phone. It would have looked fine. But, we'll see how it does in the coming weeks with live demo reviews on YouTube. A stupid notch is making me consider upgrading to a phone (8+) with the same big bezel design I already have and without the OLED display I have been looking forward to. They really should have done a demo with how videos will look and how the notch will affect other areas of the phone during the keynote.

Is it not perhaps possible for Apple to implement a black bar extending from the notch (as seen in a mockup) in a iOS 11 update? I wonder if that's something that can be fixed on a software level.

They released a statement to devs that they are not to mask the notch by adding black bars, neither at the top nor the bottom. So i'm sure apple wants that notch to be visible in the X form factor

The aspect ratio of the iPhone X is very different than the iPhone 8, 7, 6 or 5.

What Apple has done is make the display longer than the iPhone 8,7, and 6.

This means the only way to watch native 16:9 video is with bars on the side...

OR...

Zoom the video to full screen. However when you go full screen the video will actually be cropped, cutting out what should be visible content, and also the notch will intrude on video content.

So in reality, watching video in the native aspect ratio (with black bars but everything fully visible) is like watching video on a 4.7" display, not anywhere close to 5.8".

Here is a video. Fast forward to 2:20. They show the true aspect ratio of video which shows the black bars and hides the notch.

To watch it in the correct aspect ratio, yes there will be black bars, and no the the top notch won't protrude.

Critically though, those black bars will be far thinner than the black bezels on either the standard or plus phones, so whichever way you slice it, the X wins.

And I do not like either of those scenarios. Lol. If I leave it native, its like im watching video on a seemingly smaller screen than I have now. This notch has caused a lot of dissatisfaction. I hope Apple is seeing or getting the feedback on this.

That looked much better, but most of the YouTube videos I watch their true aspect ratio is always taking up my full screen. So will it do the same on the X and the notch getting in the way?

There are real UX and UI challenges for the iPhone X that will take time for Apple and app developers to overcome.

As you said, you're paying $1000+ for a 5.8" device that has to act like a 4.7" device to give the best experience with many types of content. Does that make sense? Not really.

How accurate is that? The X's screen is 5.8" - on the video I've seen where the content is shrunk to avoid the notch and give true aspect ratio, it still looked a lot bigger than the 7. The way you put it, the screen size is shrunk to 4.7", but that's not consistent with the hands on videos.

I have a Galaxy S8+ which also has a long aspect ratio

When you play youtube vids there are black bars on both sides in landscape due to the differences in aspect ratio

Going full screen requires zooming (cropping). This shaves off some content around the edges, but it does fill that glorious large 6.2" display.

The difference being there is no notch on the S8+ so the UX is not as funky.
