Exactly.

And i'm sick of people comparing OS's. Android OS is on 42 phones. iOS is on ONE phone. It's not losing by much, what's that tell you?

Anyone who thinks that, if you compare it to ANY SINGLE Android device, the iPhone is not the #1 most sold phone in the world is ABSOLUTELY OFF THEIR ROCKER. The iPhone destroys any singular other devices by MILLIONS.

Even the beloved Samsung Galaxy S2 can't compete.

Bend over a bit more. Steve jobs is coming to your house very soon.

Android is a software based operating system.
iOS is a software based operating system.
Windows 7 is an operating system.
OS X is an operating system.

I just reread this and realized it makes no sense whatsoever. There is NO difference between "software based" operating systems and operating systems because operating systems are just software. They do no include hardware but only support for it through drivers (which are also software).
iOS is essentially a stripped down version of OS X geared towards running it efficiently on a smaller ARM based processor, with less RAM, and with support for additional networking hardware (GSM/CDMA). Overall, they are almost identical in structure and identical in the languages that make them up (minus things like Carbon).

The same can be said for Android, though it lacks the parent OS that iOS has. Windows 7 is also the same as all of the others, except, like OS X, it was written for desktop and laptop computers with more power to take advantage of more advanced features and more advanced applications

Why are people so fixated on these things? Buy a phone/plan that meet your needs, and be happy.

People want to feel a sense of validation from their investment. If the tide of public opinion in any way seems to favor they option they did not choose, they will go to great length to convince themselves that they are right and the "other guys" are wrong.

Calm down there, killer. The page I linked to explicitly mentions that their survey data references the smartphone market and since the iPhone is the only phone that runs iOS... saying that iOS is the #2 platform is correct.

If you want to start counting iPods, Ipads, and everything else Apple makes (why? just so that Apple comes out ahead?) then you'll have to find a different report to comfort yourself with (lol).

Saying that iOS is the number 2 smartphone platform is correct, but it is the number one mobile device platform. It is incorrect to say otherwise.

Why would you not count all the devices that run the same operating system? You want to talk about platforms so you can't create an artificial line that says only smartphones count towards the platform; they all run the same OS and apps.

If you're going by total installations, I believe that Symbian and BREW still outnumber all other mobile OSes.

At the current rate of adoption, Android could bypass everyone by this time next year.

It's never a good idea to hang a hat on your favorite "whatever" being ahead in sales or installation numbers, as that can change rather quickly. Instead, just use what you like.

Who cares.

Can't we just get along. You cannot have 100% of the world's smartphone using population to use one OS. Never. You will always have people who dislike and don't use iOS, android, WP7, symbian etc etc etc. It's mostly personal as many of these OS do everything fine. So just buy what you like and need and enjoy it. OS battles are for the losers.

So based on that article, Apple did NOT lose to Microsoft in the desktop space because we should NOT lump all the Windows OEM's together? I recall Steve Jobs saying Apple lost to Microsoft a long time regarding desktop OSes. Mac vs PC debate all over again.

I generally don't care who wins and don't base popular = best. I think Apple still makes the best computers even if Macs have an 11% or less marketshare. And for all we know, neither iOS or Android will be as popular by 2017-2018 which is about a decade after they were introduced. I don't think I will find the time to swift through 500K apps my whole life. Passing trends. Exposé said it best in that song, Seasons Change...feelings change. Remember when wearing bell-bottoms were still cool? That's how I look at mobile phones. Like fashion. Look at every company that used to be on top before their downfall. Every great empire collapses someday. Even Apple went through some dire financial straits in the mid-1990's and I remember some people calling their computer the Macintrash. I bet one day, Google will be just as hated as Apple. Like humans, technology is built to become obsolete. The older it gets, the slower it runs and more useless it becomes. Nothing stays cool forever. Look at RAZR or BlackBerry.

I prefer iOS right now over Android, but I find it ironic that I probably use more things owned from Google on a daily basis. I use Chrome over FireFox. I "google" things everyday or log onto YouTube. I use my Google Music Beta to listen to all my 1,200 songs in case my phone is running out of battery at the library. GMaps is always important. I have been using my GMail more than Yahoo! Mail because it filters spam. My most used app on my iPhone is currently my Google Voice app just for unlimited texting. The only software I generally use daily from Apple is iTunes and the default apps on the iPhone. Most apps I generally use on the iPhone are from third-party developers.

It is like I buy Apple hardware to use Google services. If iPhone is that "vehicle", the road to get onto that Information Super Highway is mostly owned by Google.
