Attached ZIP file holding "All-white.jpg", 10800 × 7200.

This is to verify that uploading a ZIPped JPEG with large dimensions works.
The ZIP file is under 4KB; the unzipped JPEG is ~1.2MB.

Untested: There may be a limit to the size of ZIP files.

The image was produced by starting with a not-all-white image, then adjusting Contrast and other settings until an all-white image resulted. That was then saved as a new file.
Surely an all white pic like this is going to have little image data, so zipping to under 2MB is not an issue.
Other medium-large pics with heavy graphical content will still have the issue.

Looking at the admin control panel on my other Xenforo site, there appears to be just one global setting for attachment size, regardless of file type. On that site, we are using the default size of 16,384 KB. As I said, no idea of how this is configured at MacRumors. But unless there's another setting I've missed (which is quite possible!) then you wouldn't be able to get around the attachment size limit by using .zip instead of .jpg or .png files.
So why not just raise the limit to a more reasonable 16MB then? 🤷‍♂️
Problem mostly solved.

I am also running into this issue if I had photos taken with the Ultra Wide camera of my iPhone, it gives me the image too big error. I have a 15 pro too. Probs due to file size?

It is more an issue of image size (dimension) than file size. The image cannot be larger than 2000 pixels in either direction.
That’s the reality. If I want to upload an image, I have to use an image downsizer, right? When I use the fusion cameras, telephoto, or main camera of my 15 Pro, I don’t encounter this issue because fewer pixels are used. It’s not about the size of the image, but the number of pixels. This particular image exceeds double the maximum resolution. Sample metadata below 👇

Unless there's been some change recently, these are the limitations. If you look at the previous page of this thread, there are several suggestions for reducing image dimensions to make them compliant.

The limit is set to 2000 pixels in either dimension. With over a million attachments in our database, you can imagine they take up a good amount of storage space.

On macOS it's easy, but when I posting from iPhone or iPad, it's pain!

If the photos are in Photos it's relatively easy:
I export them to the Desktop on my Mac as JPEG, high quality and large size.

If you do it directly from the iPhone there should be a setting for the image sharing quality somewhere...

Edit: On the iPhone, when you click "Attach files" here on MR (or similar places), and choose the Photo Library, you get into the picker where you can select one or more images:

Then use the options toggle button-thingy at the bottom right:

To access the quality-settings for the export/upload:

A bit off topic but related to photo upload:

I am unable to upload a DNG file to Facebook with a resolution of 8064 × 6048 but a JPEG file with a resolution of 8064 × 6048 works fine. You know how big a 48MP ProRAW photo gets so Facebook does not have a resolution limitation but a file size limitation.

Considering most people shoot in 12MP [4032 × 3024] or the 24MP used by Apple, and MacRumors has a limit of 2000 × 2000 for the photo, it's understandable that some users who post straight from their iPhone or android phone get an error about the file being too big.
