The whole 8GB crap...

Even the 16gb is pretty useless these days. I can't even cache my Spotify music and have enough place for my offline Google maps and text messages.

For some reason my gym doesn't have wifi, so I have to cache my music or I will kill my data plan by streaming.

32gb needs to be the minimum.

The base model in 2007 was 4GB 🙂
And I remember those selling for $199-299 on clearance without 2-yr contract a couple of months after release. 🙄

Besides, we didn't exactly have an app store back then and screen resolution was a mere 320x480. When we finally got the app store, I believe the biggest app I downloaded was 50MB (probably less). There were also no OTA updates and even if there was, iOS update files were less than 300MB. I'd say the landscape has changed considerably since then, wouldn't you agree? Sure, most people use streaming services now but the space savings from less media on device has been more than offset by the increased storage required by firmware and apps.

Useless for some, perfectly fine (and sometimes more than that) for plenty of others.

That said, it would definitely be great if 32 GB (or more) was the base model.

I'm completely agree, but it is nice to have the extra space standard. Even my mother is having issues with her 16gb 5S. All she does is take pictures, WhatsApp, Viber, etc, and she's always running low on memory. The high-res pictures and videos add up pretty quickly, it seems.

I cant afford to pay that much haha. The only reason im getting the 5C (i wanted the 6) is because its cheap. Im getting it with AT&T Next 24 so i will be able to upgrade within a year. With the data plan im getting, along with the cost of the phone, will be about 65$ a month. And i only gotta pay 27$ up front and then they will ship me the phone. The only thing i dislike is that i have to wait 7-14 business days for it to ship. 🙁
You do realize you pay much more in the long run, right? 😕

You still need to make a total of 24 months worth of payments even if you plan on upgrading on month 12. That's $360 ($15*12 months + $180 lump sum) for that iPhone 5c 8GB which you're still going to have to return to AT&T in order to upgrade. 😕

The Next and Edge programs aren't bad in and of themselves but I can see how carriers are taking advantage of their less mathematically inclined customers. 🙁

Everyone buys what they think is most suitable for them.

The 8GB model is made for a very specific market, mainly the target group that uses Cloud services for everything. If you stream your music and you don't have every photo you take on the actual phone, the 8GB is honestly more than enough. All my friends have 8GB iPhones and they have music, photos and apps on it and they still have space left. I myself have an 8GB model and I have like 4 gigs left (and that's after the space iOS 8 takes up), because I use the iCloud Photo Library and I stream my music through Spotify. If you have an unlimited data plan the 8GB model can be a great deal, really. All the iPhone sweetness for cheaper.

It seems contradictory that this same group who are way ahead of the curve with tech using cloud storage almost exclusively, is the same group who want to use 2.5 year old hardware.

Doesn't it seem likely that many users who aren't tech savvy opt for it as the cheapest model and end up having a negative experience? Their impression of an Apple product, costing a not insignificant amount of money, won't be 'it just works'.

Haha. Very funny. 😛 But im just curious. Im sure people have brought this up before but i haven't read anything about it. Forgive me for asking.

In my opinion the 8gig models are "sucker bait" totally unaware Idevice users buy them and Apple gets a guaranteed icloud storage upgrade out of it!

buyer beware!

😱

it's not contradictory at all. It's the same group that doesn't want to spend much on a device but still have an iPhone. I'm not talking about the ones fortunate enough to afford the newer ones, there's a pretty big portion of teens who cannot afford 600 bucks retail or don't want to get into contract, or don't even wanna buy used phones off the Internet, so the options are pretty much narrowed down to the 8GB devices.

I couldn't afford the 5S or the 6, so I went for the 4S until I'd have the funds for something better. The experience is not negative at all; well it's not the best but it's not bad either. It works ok.

You guys do realize that the 5c 8GB is $450 retail, right? To be honest, I think if you can save $450, saving another $100 to get a $550 5s 16GB isn't that huge of a stretch.

Unless of course, it's the bank of mom and dad paying for the phone and service and all they're willing to get is the "free" phone.

I don't know how people operate in the US, but the retail price of iPhones in Europe varies a lot. Most retailers import the phones from other countries and the price difference can be as big as 250 USD. Unless you're from Europe, you have no idea how the pricing system over here works. The 5C 8GB retails for 450 there, but over here, it retails for 300.

As for the "mom and dad" comment... Let's not. I have noticed your comments are rather snarky and borderline rude, so I'd rather not get into a long quarrel with you. I pay for my phones.

You nailed it.
iTunes music was 128kbps back then, now its 256/320 standard.
The original iPhone didn't even have MMS capabilities, (unless jailbroken), and picture image quality was only 2MP. They didn't take video.

Now they have 8MP camera's 1080P 60FPS video. Files were tiny back then.

Average app size was 10mb or under back then. Now I find most apps are 40-50mb or more. Back then that would have been a HUGE app.
