The Max is a great phone...I just don't see it as much of an upgrade over the X unless you are heavy into watching videos/TV content. I played with one for about an hour at the store and here's what I observed:
- It's horrible in landscape mode. App Store, Home App, Music doesn't support landscape so it basically makes it a portrait only phone. I hated having to switch back and forth on my 7+ so I just locked it in Portrait.
- Given #1, the content differences between the two weren't "glaring" enough for me to upgrade. Sure possibly 1-2 more "lines" or rows of data or text but not enough for me
- Given #2, a lot of apps aren't optimized yet so just look like bloated X apps. I know this will change but given the number of apps that don't even support the X it won't be universal.
- Given #1, it's horrible for one-handed use. I absolutely love being able to use my X one handed. I normally use my X naked except for few times I'll use a case when around a lot of kids and it's still great one handed.
- The so called camera improvements just weren't there in my small sample. The photos on my X that washed out certain lit spots could be eliminated easily by forcing HDR on (I have Auto-HDR turned off for this reason). Once I did that, the differences weren't as glaring. I've used my X on two different vacations this year and took some amazing pictures and given my small sample size (about 10 pictures) I didn't see it. I even showed them to a few people and they couldn't see differences. Granted there wasn't a large sample of lighting differences but the lighting I use were ones that the X normally struggled.
- Just didn't see any speed differences. Didn't test WIFI but just usage. Switch apps, opening, etc there was no noticeable difference. Heck, my wife and son's iPhone 7s fly now on iOS12.
