Here's the letter and thanks for your ideas about an Amex coverage and contacting the Dept of Trans.

I am not sure if you filed a claim with Amex yet, but here is the web page with the info about the purchase protection.

Until I read this forum discussion, I didn't know you could have the password set to one time, and the slide to unlock set at another time or with the lock button.

yes, i'm well aware that you can do a dfu restore to reset the ipad without the need to crack the passcode.

but there was one poster in this thread who mentioned they set their password on their ipad after reading this thread and i wanted to remind people who think merely putting a simple passcode without setting the wipe option aren't securing that data as much as they think.

Well if the person knows anything they won't even turn it on, they will connect to to their computer in restore mode and wipe the device without it ever actually booting up. Just like that, your device is gone without a trace. It's very easy actually

DFU and restore as new in iTunes
No turn on is required

Once again, I fully intended to be taking my regulation size carryon on the plane. It was last minute that they told me to tag it. It ends up that we were over weight and they asked a "large" woman and her husband (could have been her brother; same last name) to get off the plane. The only reason I know this is that while I was explaining everything that happened to one of the Delta officials and told her about our delay and then them asking a couple to leave the plane, she said, "yes, I remember that flight. It was an over weight issue".

By the way, I had an Incase cover on the back and the apple cover on the front. On the back of the iPad was engraved, "my name, call xxx-xxx-xxxx for a reward".

Like that's going to happen!

As stated before, you should have taken 6 seconds to unzip the front of your bag and slip the iPad right out into your hands. Delta would have absolutely waited a few seconds since your right and intention was to take the bag on-board. You didn't do that. You didn't have a password. You lost your iPad to theft...hey, it happens.

Be glad it wasn't your family heirloom Rolex or something.

Hope you get a fat check from Delta, but I'd seriously seriously doubt it.

Just be more careful next time I guess (I fly weekly on Delta - Platinum FF - in no way would I have left my iPad in there, just saying).

Listen, I know I should have taken six seconds to pull it out and yes, I'm glad it wasn't something that couldn't be replaced. All I'm saying is that in all of my travels (90,000 miles last year), this was the first time I have EVER left anything of value in a stored carry on. It happened because it was a totally unexpected situation that caught me off guard and in that split second, I forgot to pull the iPad out.

It's just a shame that airline baggage theft is so rampant that they "hit" me the very first and only time I left something in the bag. I'm guessing that theft is the "norm" and not the exception; which is pathetic.

Dude, the OP has explained the circumstances so give your comments a rest. He does not need to be lectured by you or others on this thread.

Hindsight is always 20-20.

it sounds like you travel more than a bit and if this was first time something was taken from your luggage during all those travels, then i don't think you can opine that it's the norm.

my personal opinion is that luggage ransacking is perhaps commonplace, but not the norm. of course, if anything is taken from you, doesn't matter if it's a piece of clothing or an ipad, it's upsetting.

So you have not lost anything in your entire life? There is such a thing called accident and if you tell me you can prevent accident under all circumstances, start calling yourself God then. Or else, go bark somewhere else.

not an iPad, iPhone, or computer. Things that have high value i make sure i'm super careful with. I would never pack away my iPad in a stow away bag regardless if it was coming on the plane with me. It would be in a backpack or my wifes purse etc. Some people are super careful with their things and others are somewhat careless. There has been numerous threads where someone had their iPad in some bag and left it on the train or left it in a cab.....that is something that would not happen with me as I wouldn't let something leave my sight. Not saying i'm God by any means...but this guy packed his iPad in a bag that obviously was not the right size to be a carry on or they wouldn't have made him check it last minute.

----------

the thing is if someone stole your ipad or phone, they're gonna have to turn it on if they want to use it or even if they want to erase it. otherwise, it might as well be a brick for all the good it'll do them. now, i'm not saying findmyiphone can't be defeated, just that it at least gives you a better chance to recover your device than not having it.

.
the other thing that i wanted to point out is that if data security is important to you, should your ipad or iphone be stolen/lost/left behind, is to make sure you enable the erase after 10 failed attempts. by not enabling that feature, even if you think you've secured your device with a 4 digit passcode, brute force cracking of a 4 digit password doesn't take that long with some diligent effort.

so if you want to protect your data, do it right.
not true and this is where apple fails to make find my iPhone a great feature. You can turn off the device without having to enter a password and you can wipe the device and set it up as new without having to enter a password either. If someone is going to steal your device or finds it....they will know all they need to do is turn it off and it can't be traced. They want a new device? Simply hook it up to their computer and wipe it.

dude, try reading all the posts in this thread before you post.

the OP's luggage was within the airline's carry-on size limit and i knew that the ipad can be restored to factory default without knowing the passcode.

Bank has super tight security and the bank operators are super careful as well. But there are still robberies taking place. I find your reasoning appalling!

I had a meeting at a client's firm and on my way home realized that I left my iPad in the conference room (downtown Chicago high rise office building). I remotely locked it and kept it that way ever since. Totally worth the minor hassle not to have that brief moment of terror that your stuff is accessible to all.

How do you remotely lock it?

My hubby never believed in locking his iPad. practically used it from about a year and a half before I convinced him to password protect it. He travelled about a week later, returned and told me he ran into some bad luck. Forget his iPad in the hotel room. Luckily someone from our sister island also travelled to the same conference and was catching a later flight and collected it for me. He thanked me though for convincing him to password protect it.

I hate it when they make me check my carry on. I normally have a checked bag and I take my laptop bag with me. They made me check it and I was nervous the entire flight that someone would steal something. Luckily nothing was taken, but since then I have bought luggage locks for my carry on for those freak times they make me check it. I know those aren't foolproof, but hopefully they will deter the thief somewhat from checking what is inside.

As for my iPhone and iPad they never leave my hands or pocket. I would never put it in my carry on if it was getting checked because I would be afraid the baggage handler would throw the bag or something and break the screen.

Alas mistakes do happen and I hope you're able to move on. I would be gutted if someone stole my iPad. Take it easy OP.

How lucky you are to not be human and therefore never capable of making a simple mistake.

I keep my carry on under the seat so it is with my at all times. I do not put it in he overhead compartment.
