If they release 4.0 now with the ipad, when the new iphone comes out, there will be no selling points other than a new design possibly.

It seems like apple has tied the major os releases to new iphone devices.

I am guessing 4.0 will ship with the new iphone and will be available as an upgrade to ipod touch users and ipad users.

We actually don't know the OS version on the iPad.

The iPod touch and iPhone don't really run the same OS as the iPad. They're different, albeit very similar.

Is that not obvious? As if it would come from the past?

I hope 4.0 = handwriting recognition. This is seriously lacking.

Through testing it was proven that handwriting recognition is the slowest form of text entry. That and Apple's lack of stylus leads me to think we will not being seeing it.

I hadn't heard that. So, why didn't they release it today? Also, where was the beta testing?

My guess is that the only difference was to allow it to run on a device with a screen that size.

3.2 iPhone only works on the iPad... there is no 3.2 for iPhone or iPod Touch...

The development was the 3.2 SDK coming out, obviously no reason for the actual OS to be out since the iPad hasn't even shipped.

Current hand writing technology is the slowest. There is always a possibility in future generations.

    You're half right.

The new OS launches OFFICIALLY with the newest iPhone in June/July. However, Apple talks about it and releases a developer SDK march-ish.

However, "no selling points" is incorrect. What you're missing is the hardware upgrade part of the yearly iPhone release. Things like, faster processor, more memory, better camera, OLED screen, RFID etc etc...is what makes the new iPhone the selling point.

If Apple decided not to release a hardware upgrade (highly unlikely), THEN there would be no point in upgrading (at least for the 3GS owners anyway).

I may be wrong but when the iPhone was first announced didn't they show a certain feature set that was then added to by release?

Why can't this happen with iPad?

That make iPhone OS 3.2 a temporary version that has most stuff in place so they could get the iPad up and running, but then version 4.0 (Which has been seen in logs hasn't it) is what will arrive at the iPhone/Dev event usually in March when they'll also be about to start shipping the iPad - Presumably with some new features like multitasking etc...

Just my thought... It seems clear the OSs will converge at some point, version 4.0 seems the obvious one as didn't we hear it would make the iPhone more like a computer than anything else on the market... iWork for iPad & iPhone maybe???
