there is anyway to get iphone 3g without a contract ?

I really want to get iphone 3g but I live in Israel and there isn't apple store on Israel.
please can you tell if there is some way to buy iphone (in u.s) without contract to at&t ?
I heard that there is option to buy iphone 3g on apple store without contract but it will cost a lot (599$).
is it true ? somebody know someone that buy iphone without contract to at&t ?
please let me know how I can get the iphone because I want to get him so much ...

AT&T has announced that they will sell them unsubsidized and I'm almost positive without a contract for $499 and $599. You could also try ebay, there are probably some on there, But that probably won't work, because the iPhones currently being sold in the US are locked to AT&T and can't be used on another carrier's network.
