I've just downloaded firefox and when trying to set it up had the message as above. I searched the reccommended applications but couldn't find one. Had this loads of time when installing stuff. What is the process for choosing appropriate applications.??????????

Thats weird. thtats never happened to me. i just drag teh app to the applications folder, open it from there and it works. are you sure you're doing something wrong?
