Hi all,

Something occurred to me while looking over the new iPhone 14 models, and I thought I'd get it down here before I forgot, just to see if I'm alone. That thing is weight. I already find my iPhone 11 Pro Max pretty brick-ish when it's in pocket, and the 13 Pro Max which I owned for a few months was noticeably more so. The difference in their weight is around 14 grams, but like I said, it's quite obvious. I checked, and it turns out that the Plus is 23 grams lighter than my phone and 37 grams lighter than the 14 Pro Max. That's around the same as the 8 Plus I used a few years back, which despite not feeling as well put together as the 11 Pro Max, definitely was much easier to carry around (easy in the sense of not being irritated by this dense object in my pocket and having to pull up my pants as they sag).

I'm not sure that this is enough of a factor to keep me from the much improved cameras on the 14 Pro Max (not to mention last year's 120 Hz), but it's at least worth considering.

Are any of you in the same boat in terms of leaning towards the Plus over the Max due to weight?

Me too. Gave up the pro models since the 11 pro because of the weight. Went pro this year due to the fact the large discrepancy between the two phones now. Just going to have to get used to the weight again.

Same here. What gets me is how unnecessary most of the weight is. Use an aluminium chassis and it wouldn’t be a problem. I fail to see what exactly stainless steel is adding to the experience other than making the device heavier than it need be.

Gosh yes!! I WISH they’d do pro phones with aluminum. In fact, I just wish they’d have one lineup of phones all with the best/pro features in mini, regular, and plus. :)

Maybe they’ll use titanium in the future. That’ll still let them say that they’re using a better material, but it’ll also be a lot lighter than the stainless steel.

Going from 12 Pro to 14 Plus will be interesting to see how it weighs in.

Love the 12 Pro with 5G but only upgrading to 14 Plus for the larger screen size and SOS Satellite emergency features.

Since I don't need the "Pro" features, this time I am skipping out on the 14 Pro & 14 Pro Max.

Hoping the weight of the 14 Plus is same as my 12 Pro...

The weight for sure is an advantage. 203g vs 206g for the 6.1 inch pro and 240g for the pro max. The standard pro is hilariously weight inefficient at this point.

But I think the display is also a good reason to go for the plus. Dynamic island cuts further down the display than the notch, so you're gonna get the best viewing experience with the 14 plus (or a 13 pro max). As someone with a long commute who heavily uses my phone as a gaming/video watching device the 14 plus is pretty appealing. I can imagine the battery life will also be pretty insane with the 14 plus.

I'm not interested in the 14 Plus and it's because of the screen, after using the 120 Hz I can't go back to 60 Hz, it just feels choppy to me. But, the weight is more of what I'm looking for in a phone. I'd love for Apple to just get rid of the non-pro phones and make all phones pro phones. Then just give people the choice of case that they want to use like they do with the watch: Aluminum, Stainless Steel, and Titanium. That way we're all getting the same device just with our choice of case. Those who want a heavier device for the "premium" feel can pick up the stainless steel option and those who want lighter devices can go aluminum or titanium.

Completely agree about the standard pro being hilariously weight inefficient. Last year I tried a 13 Pro and a 13 Pro Max, I kept the 13 Pro Max as it felt better to me even though it's bigger/heavier. With the dimensions/weight of the 14 Pro / 14 Pro Max, both should feel better this year with the 14 Pro Max most likely having a better weight distribution. I've seen at least one post where somebody thought the 14 Pro Max felt lighter than their 13 Pro Max.

if they would only make an iPhone 15 with the pro camera with same weight as an iPhone 12

out of curiosity, how much weight does the glass back add to the phone? Is glass necessary to prevent “bendgate”? I carry my phone in my purse or sometimes in a low cargo pants pocket so I’ve never sat on it. I’d love the choice of an aluminum chassis, non-SE phone without the glass back.

It's a difference of 37 grams... after like 5 minutes of holding the pro max you don't even notice that.

I never gave much thought to weight as I normally wear a belt and suspenders so it does not matter to me. The thing is size of the phone bothers me as a larger screen means I am less able to pocket the phone. I just prefer the regular size and got a 14 Pro. I heard some say well it is easier for the elderly to see well why the heck do I wear bifocals for. I am 64 and my wife is ten + years older then me and she prefers even smaller screen size and has a 2022 iPhone SE and she has absolutely no problems seeing what she wants to see

I appreciate you bringing up the weight as a factor. I didn’t think it would be for me, yet recently discovered that it is! And I’m physically competent.

I had a 12 Pro Max for approx 2 years and enjoyed the screen size, however, its weight at 228 grams, became more and more of an issue.

Some daily scenarios where the weight became an issue:
. Holding the phone while flat in bed or on the sofa.

. Pocketing the phone in any shorts or pants, the weight is very noticeable, and does sag and pull the pants or shorts down a bit.

. Carrying the phone in a fanny pack on hot summer days, adds extra noticeable weight, specially when biking or walking around the city for several hours.

I even got my Apple Watch with LTE so I can leave the phone at home, then discovered that the watch doesn’t replace the phone for my usage. I also considered cargo pants/shorts, didn’t find any that resonated with me. I tried to make it work as much as possible.

I really wanted the 14 Pro Max or 14 Pro, however, after seeing them at 240g and 207g, I was disappointed. I held my friend’s iPhone 11 for a while, which is at 194 grams, and it felt heavy-ish. I recently went back to using an iPhone X until I get a new phone, it’s been over a month, it weighs 174 grams, it’s perfect. I cannot tell if it’s in my pocket at times, also easy to hold for hours in bed, on the sofa or almost anywhere.

I would have laughed or chuckled at this weight conversation years ago, and I acknowledge Apple for building phenomenal Pro model phones yet for my personal preference, my next phone is going to be the 172 grams iPhone 14.

Sure I’ll miss out on macro mode, I want macro mode, and maybe the Always On Display, but I don’t need them now. As tempting as it is to get the 14 Plus for the larger screen at 203 grams, my ideal phone weight based on my personal experience and usage is currently at 174 grams, preferably less, which the iPhone 14 delivers on.

I didn’t want to skip on performance or battery life for the next 2 years, so I’m happy that the iPhone 14 delivers the same audio and video playback hours as the 12 Pro Max, which is great!

Also, according to some website, the iPhone 14 has 6gb of RAM, same number as the 14 Pro models, all the way to the 12 Pros, which is superb.
I usually consider myself a Pro iPhone person, so I’m surprised to find myself going for the iPhone 14, yet super excited by the lighter weight, and everything else it has. Only challenge is picking a colour!

Agreed !

Same here - 12 Pro to 14 Plus was amazing to feel as if I got a lighter phone for more features.

I love my 14 Plus blue against my new EV truck!
