...in the older generations of iPhone. But on the iPhone5 I don't know where it is! Does the app still exist and what is it called?

Photos on iOS 6 is now called...

...Photos on iOS 7!

The icon is completely different, so I can never find it.

What could my Core 2 Duo not do that the more modern processors can?

I could find it by searching it but not by sliding through the screen.

How can I find it and put it close to the main screen?

If an icon for a built-in app is missing...

Have you restarted (slide to power off) and/or reset (hold power and home buttons until Apple icon appears)? If that didn't fix it, then a Restore of iOS is probably needed.

But that's a long shot compared to it being in a folder. Remember that folders can now have multiple screens.
