I have a Zum (for the 2) and an Incipio Feather -(also for the 2)

The existing Zum 2 - will go onto the 3 - but it doesn't quite fit properly side to side.

I would say the Zum offers a good deal more protection to the exposed edges and corners of the iPad than the Feather...however...whilst it possibly seems more substantial and thicker than the Incipio - the material is not particularly strong....the one I have on my iPad 2 has all the corners broken off - and several cracks from some fairly limited and light impacts - so I think it looks the part but I am not convinced it will give much, if any, protection in the event of, say, a drop from waist height onto a hard floor.....mind you neither would the Incipio....

So for day to day light wear I think I might wait for the Zum....just wish they would use a more robust material to make it from...

Is the feather made out of better material?

..the perfect case would use the Zum's form factor and material thickness....but with the Feather material - scaled up...

I arrived in Tokyo last night and went to a Yodobashi store. Found more than a dozen different back shell solutions specific to the iPad 3. Bought two of them for the same price as one delivered in the USA.

Specifically, picked up a Tunewear and a Belkin case.

Ipad2 and Incipio

I've had the Incipio smart feather on the iPad2 for almost the year it has been out. It was replaced after 30 days by Incipio because the corners on the frost cover turned orange yellow, probably from the heat. I just put another Icipio smart feather frost on the new iPad3 but it doesn't fir perfectly. It grabs the edges in the front of the iPad but not the back and corners are where the smart cover attaches. The quality is good but I'm looking for something that might cover the speaker and 4g antenna better, since the Incipio doesn't. Since the iPad3 runs hotter, it would be nice to have a back with perforations to let some of the heat escape. I really like the frost, but afraid it might discolor over a short period of time. I guess I'll look at zum, butbtheir website mentions nothing about the iPad3, unless I can't find it.

There is NO perfect case. Although, it seems very possible to put all these features into one back cover.

Updates!?!?

Any updates on find a case that matches whats described in the original post???

(Except number 4)

I too am looking for the EXACT same thing and am really getting irritated that it doesn't seem to exist. I could have sworn that incase was going to come out with a Mag Snap Case for the new iPad but for SOME reason they have failed to do so!

This is the iPad 2 version:

http://goincase.com/products/detail/mag-snap-case-cl57970

Unfortunately is DOES NOT fit the new iPad. I have this on my wife's iPad 2 and it is amazing. Perfect feel, perfect texture, perfect protection, perfect magnet strip to hold the smart cover back.

It just boggles my mind that there is no AVAILABLE version of such a basic design for the new ipad, from ANY major brand

When the smart cover is open flat on the back?

I'm going to try and find 2 small thin dime size round magnets at my local craft store to attach to the back of the case to fix this problem. I don't like taking the cover off all the time either.

good idea I suppose... I would just prefer one built in, so that its flush with the back surface. I'd also worry about my own magnets falling off after a while

Right now I'm leaning towards the smartsuit because I agree with you - I'd like all around protection and the smart cover to be attached and that seems to limit the choices quite a bit.

I don't understand the whole securing the smart cover from falling off feature. I've been using the smart cover since iPad 2 and I don't see it falling frequently. I have to take it off when I want to that's it. Unless having a back shell makes it easier for the SC to fall off. I don't know this caus I didn't ever use a back cover.

I dont get it either. No, back covers dont make it easier to fall off. I thinks its just a "whole case" idea, keeping everything secure and attached. Not important to me at all.

I just want that magnet to hold the smart cover back. It makes no sense at all to design a back cover that is compatible with the smart cover and not have a magnet.

I guess its cuz Apple's whole idea with smart cover IS that you take it off completely when you go to use the device

This one (link) seems to meet most, if not all, of your criteria. But it is made of TPU, not plastic. It is designed for iPad 2, but fits my new iPad really well.

This Tucano shell looks promising. I'm surprised no one has mentioned it before. Another case with magnets besides the Belkin and the yet to be released Speck Smartshell. Anyone else have any experience with this one?

Is the fit with the new iPad really good, or just good enough? Does it lock the smart cover on?

I think the fit is great. But because of the slightly increased thickness of the new iPad and the way the case covers the edges of the iPad, I think there could be problems fitting a screen protector under the edges of the Tucano (I haven't tried one, so this is just a guess). And no, the case doesn't lock to the smart cover.

I've been searching for a cover to do basically the same thing. I'm getting an iPad this Friday and would like a Smart Cover. iSkin has a pretty good solution:

http://www.iskin.com/newipad/solosmart/

But to me it's a bit pricey. Griffin makes a nice case that does everything here (but you'd have to leave behind the smart cover):

http://store.griffintechnology.com/ipad/intellicase-for-ipad

Edit: Maybe try amazon for Griffin's case, it's ~60% cheaper here: http://www.amazon.com/Griffin-GB038...3VAI/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1333543136&sr=8-4

I ordered my Griffin stylus from there for $10 less than what griffin is charging.

The I skin looks way too candy and thick. The griffin is less elegant with the tab on the back. The ZUM looks like a real contender to the incipio feather it they make it in black so the apple logo is hidden.

yeah, the tab thingy bothers me a bit, but I haven't liked most of what I've seen besides this one, so I got the dark blue one

It does work. I picked one up today from Bestbuy for only $14.99!!!! Fits great!

Some will, some won't. I have tried over a dozen, both new and used, and none of them fit my iPad 3.

Not doubting you found one that did work but it seems it very, very hit or miss. And Incase themselves claims very clearly that it wasn't intended to work. The fact that some do just tells me there are some quality control issues at Incase.

Too bad because I LOVE the Mag Snap cases and used one since Incase released it last year.
