I believe you should be able to update it by going to the App Store (which should be the third entry in the apple menu at the top left of the screen); there should be a big advertisement for it right on the first page of the store. It's a free download, but you'll still need an Apple Store account before you can download it, I think...

As the previous post suggests, you need to use the Mac App Store to download it, but you need to be on at least 10.6.6 to see the App Store. So, select "About this Mac" from the Apple menu and see what version of OS X your computer is running. If it's less than 10.6.6, run Software Update from the Apple menu to install any 10.6 updates you have, then once you're on 10.6.6 or later, you can open the App Store application from the Apple menu and download El Capitan from there.

Thanks so much. I wasn't seeing the App Store because it is the original 10.6 version. I will upgrade to the 10.6.6 and go from there.

I'd download Yosemite and install that (If it's still available), and then go to El Capitan, but in such an old Mini, I'd stay older. El Cap isn't running all that well on my older systems. A lot of lag, and some bizarre desktop stuff going on. Yosemite seemed to have performed better...

I'm glad it's working... Fantastic!

EDIT: Forgot the Software Update angle. But Yosemite has been, IMO, the better choice for older hardware. Most of the goodies in El Cap won't run on that mini anyway...

It isn't offered by Apple. For many people, including myself with several computers, there is no loss of performance with 10.11 vs. 10.10. I would just go to El Capitan.

I just go into 'Purchased', and it's there. Mavericks is there too.

Sure, El Cap might 'work', but you might be happier with Mavericks. I've downgraded one system, a newer Mac Mini to Yosemite from El Cap. It just wore like a noose around its neck. It would beach ball for a while, and then check back in. Depending on what was going on, it got ridiculous. I even bumped the memory. Didn't try an SSD. Only one I have is a 60g. Not much use...

It would be interesting to see if an SSD makes a difference.
 
Now the best way to get my pictures and music onto my "new" mini is how? I've got my stuff saved on an external hard drive. Migration assistant maybe?

My advice: Make sure that iTunes is set to 'COPY' the data. Long story...

I'd import everything off of the external, unless it's a Time Machine target, which means getting Time Machine to 'bless the drive, and restore things from it.

Iphoto (Photos), and iTunes/iBooks really like to have the import duty in my experience. Even after copying the data for iTunes, it still moved the data to incorporate in into the database. (It was an earlier version)

Since things are on the external, just import it from there, then wipe the drive and use Time Machine in the future...

You can import *all* music files from the external at once. Might take a while, but iTunes will be happy. Same with iPhoto/Photos.

I'm hoping someone can give me some advice here.

I used My Passport for Mac to save my data before I switched hard drives. When I got the software updated, I plugged the Passport in then I dragged the music folder over to my desktop then copied that into my documents folder just to get it off my desktop view. I then went into iTunes and clicked on add to library. I selected the music folder in my documents and everything transferred into iTunes.

I purchased a song in the iTunes store, and it shows up fine in iTunes, but when I click on the document tab and go to that artist, the song doesn't show up. In iTunes, if I click on show in finder, it will show it then, but not in the document tab.

What am I doing wrong, and how can I correct this? If I copy the music folder under the documents tab onto the Passport for Mac, all my songs will not be saved on my external hard drive. I'm assuming my photos would do the same if I attempted it, but not sure.

On my MPB, not that it matters, all of the music on it is from iTunes, and all of it shows up if I go to 'Show in Finder', or drill down in Finder.

I would suggest that you 'Show Path Bar' under 'View'. Make sure that iTunes actually placed the tracks in a folder that is under the artist, and now a random folder somewhere.

I have always been able to find the tracks under Finder. I chose 'Keep iTunes Media folder organized', and iTunes places all of the files under the more sane 'Artist/album/ hierarchical format rather than random named folders.

If you didn't check that box under 'Advanced' in Preferences, you can chose it, and re-import the files. I don't think that you can 'auto-magically' organize the files after they have been unorganized by iTunes. You could try that, but it might not work.

But anyway, if you look at the 'Path Bar' in finder, it will show breadcrumbs at the bottom that you can hover over to get the path...

EDIT: And for speed, I'd have left the files on the Passport, and imported them off the external drive. It might have been quicker, and it would have saved the time copying the files to the new drive.
